Dr. Kurian is pragmatic. She is cool, composed and confident -- all the qualities you want in the hands of a woman holding the scalpel. She was with the renowned NYU practice but left for private practice. She still has surgical privileges at NYU. I was seeing Dr. Christine Ren Fielding (just profiled in the Obesity Surgery journal: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11695-019-04042-9). She's good but she didn't do my surgery, she very well known, has a huge patient base and doesn't spend much time with patients. So after a year of follow up with her way over due for a visit, I went back to Kurian. iPad in hand, 7 years post-op she walked into the room, looked me 100+ pounds later, snapped her fingers a couple times and said "I put a lap band in you," like she was asking. I confirmed that she did. Her bedside manner post-op is a little cool, but preop she's supportive and kind. I was 28 when she did my surgery and at my first follow up the waist band of my pants was sitting right on the scar for the port. She burst out, "your pants are on my sutures!" I said, "your sutures? Didn't the resident open and close?" (standard practice). She said, "no. You're 28. There's going to be bikinis and boyfriends in your future. No sloppy sleep deprived resident sutures for you. I opened. I closed. I did everything in between. When my weight plateaued at about 40% WL, the approximate exception for a LAP-BAND, she was very honest with me. I'm 5'0 with a medium frame and very large breasts for my size. "Look, if the number of the scale is bothering you, subtract 17 pounds for those," she said gesturing to my breasts. You're carrying the remaining weight on your stomach but your dress to hide it. But I know you used to be a 0 and if you want to lose the rest, I get it. I promised you bikinis and boyfriends. Cut the sugar. This is a tool, not a crutch." She may not have remember my name 7 years later or even said, "hello," but she remembered my surgery. And she supported me through my journey. She worked at the WLS-pioneering NYU practice at Langone, is honest about your progress and realistic expectations and goals. She's worth the trip. Dr. Ren Fielding and her husband, Dr. Fielding, may be the brand names at Langone, but Kurian is the best.

Today 4/26/14 is my 10-yr Post Op anniversary (RNY) and I am approx. 100-lbs less than my former self. Dr. Kurian saved my life! She is caring, compassionate and dedicated to her patients. There is no doubt in my mind that seeking out Dr. Kurian was the best choice for me. I would recommend her to anyone considering WLS.

Dr. Kurian is my hero!...Seriously...I had LapBand surgery in September 2008 and went from my top weight on my struggle to become healthy and support my journey to lose 100 pounds over 3 years - but with the unfortunate staph infection I developed in fall 2010, wr had to remove my band in January 2012 - Dr. K has to clean out all that infection as well for healing - for three months I struggled - but Dr. Kurian and the NYU Weight Loss team kept their promise to assist in get me approved for the Vertical Sleeve this past mont and the laproscopic VSG was performed - as my weight w/o the 'brain signal' was a nightmare for me as I gained 15-20 pounds and yo-yo'd....but here I am - learning the walk again with the VSG....and do greatful to have such a pro-active, caring surgeon like Kurian to partner with me on my health journey...!

She is AMAZING! I've known her since 2001 when she was at Lenox Hill where I had my RNY with a different surgeon. When I came to an info session in 2010, seeking a revision, the first thing she said to me, was "I remember you" and then when I told her how much I gained back she replied "you are still beautiful". Worried about what I was to do, DS, RNY-RNY or a BOB, she guided me thru the process to the BOB. She knew my weaknesses (wine) and my strengths (exercise) and gave me the information and knowledge to make a educated decision. I went with the BOB. When my Mom, who was totally supportive with the RNY in 2002, objected, Dr. K spoke to her on the phone, answering all her questions. The night before my surgery, I spoke with her on the phone and she reassured me of my decision. Today, I am 4 mos out, have restriction back and down over 40lbs, and I am 16lbs to goal. Dr. Kurian has been as advertised as I knew she would be.

Dr. Kurian is the greatest ever... To me she is the Guru of WLS!!! Back in 2006 when I was researching doctors I had decided to go with Dr. Kurian. Unfortunately she did not participate in my insurance company. What a bummer! Well she recommended another affiliate doctor. I had a Lapband done due to me not being quite comfortable with another doctor doing any of the other procedures on me. Well the Band and I was not a great fit so I had to have a revision now in 2010. Great news... Dr. Kurian has since joined the practice of the doctor that did my 1st WLS. She has now done my Revision. I feel at home with me finally. Dr. Kurian has very skilled, blessed hands. She is still the same caring, loving doctor I 1st met in 2006. Her office staff are top notched, caring extremely helpful with everything. She takes care of her patients personally. Not like many doctors who shuffle you off to a PA etc... She is extremely honest and straight forward with you on every procedure and will answer a questions you may have. I would rate Dr. Kurian a 10 out of 10. Both her surgical competence and bedside manner are superb. If you are looking for a great surgeon I highly recommend you call her up before you go anywhere else. Trust me you would't be disappointed.

I just had a revision surgery with Dr. Kurian. I like her very much, she's thorough, matter of fact but also very warm wth a great sense of humor. I felt she has both excellent surgical competence and bed side manner.
