I felt Dr. Lirio and his assistant Paula were very competent and very compassionate people. They are very accomodating as they allowed me to have my blood work and ultrasound at home. They also got all my doctor appointments [psyche and endo] on the same day as my surgeon visit. He gives a very thorough "lecture" explaining the surgery and pre-op and post-op care. I was very impressed with everything about him. The only negative aspect was that he seemed to struggle for words to express himself, and that is a bit disconcerting. But, he is able to laugh at himself and continue on.
I met with him for the first time today 8/27/99. It took me a month and a half to get my appointment. Initially I was told that I would not be able to get a surgery date until December but after my exam they are going to do me in October because I have a large Umbillical Hernia that is painful to me.
Dr. Lirio took approximately 2 hour to fully explain the surgery, the potential negative side effects, what can be expected post op and answere questions fully and without giving the impression that any of them were stupid.
He discussed follow up care. What would be expected of me. How best to make the most out of this surgery.
I am very confident in Dr. Lirio and his abilities. He is very cautious!!! I like that. He will not do lap weight loss surgery. Paula, his office assistant is great!!! Dr. Lirio seems to stress relaxing while eating and introducing foods after surgery.
My only complaint, and it's not really a complaint, is he had to reschedule his initial visit with me twice. I was psyched up and ready to meet him and get going, and the let down was a little tough.
But, that's over and done with and I'll be having surgery on 9/15/99.
My surgery uncovered other problems that even extensive pre-op testing did not expose. I would have been dead within a matter of weeks if it weren't for him! The more I see him, the more impressed I am with him!
Several days after surgery and just before I was to be released from the hospital, I came down with a probable touch of food poisoning. He and his medical team had to have been with me at least 6 hours straight, plus in telephone communication throught the night.
If you have a choice, HE is your man!
