Dr. Hallowell out of University of VA Bariatrics is a Rockstar! He is a great surgeon with an excellent bedside manner. I have enjoyed my experiences with him every time, even when he was pressing me to do better in my first year and a half after surgery.

Before the surgery, there was a group meeting to talk about things that would happen during our various surgeries, and they told us up front the extensive type of care we would need, such as vitamins for the rest of our lives, and calcium citrate instead of the "plain" kind. They showed us plenty of information so we would have a decent understanding of what we would be going through. They did tell me a month or so before the surgery that because of my size and health issues I was more likely to have problems afterwards, but I came through with flying colors.

He is really big on aftercare, as I mentioned above. He had me come in for check-ups more often than I was "required", so that he could encourage me. I think there was indeed a support group either there at the hospital or in the immediate area for the WLS patients, but I lived too far away to participate in that.

His staff is really good too. I also meet with a nutritionist at each appointment and learned a lot from both of the ladies I have met.
His office staff is considerate and very nice and professional whenever I go in, and on the phone as well.

To start with, I was super obese (423 lbs-down from 444) when I came in in 2010. Even still, he was able to do a laprascopic RYN on me. He was pleased about that, and so was I-less scarring! He treated me really well, and I had a wonderful surgery experience. Almost no side effects like excessive pain, or bleeding, or other issues people have soon after surgery. I think this was due to his expertise.

All-in-all, I have enjoyed him being my surgeon and follow-up physician. I think both his surgical competence and beside manner are fantastic and I think anyone who is heading to UVA for Bariatric surgery wouldn't go wrong with him.

Dr Hallowell was extremely helpful, answering all my questions, and my first impression was that of "my knight in shining armor". My impression did not change, and has not changed. His staff working with him have been fabulous, and would recommend him to anyone looking for this life changing procedure. I am a nurse, and he talked to me in ways that he knew I would understand, and explained things to my husband(who is not a health professional) so I wouldn't have to. He was awesome, and took excellent care of me, even though I had a complication. At midnight, he was still in the hospital, when the bleed was realized, and I wouldn't be alive today if he hadn't come to help fix me up. I knew the risk of bleeding was possible, and going to a teaching hospital, you have to realize there is a greater chance for error. Luckily, my complication was caught and fixed before it took my life. :)

During my consultation with Dr. Hallowell he was very understanding about my need to have this surgery done. He was very professional and confident that I would get approved. The office staff is awesome and handles everything in a timely manner. Dr. Hallowell has explained everything from beginning to end and stressed how this is a life changing surgery. If I were to rate Dr. Hallowell and staff on a scale of 1-10 I would say a 10 because they truly show that they care!

When I first meet Dr. Hallowell, he seemed like all business, but after the second meeting I began to really feel his softer side. He is a wonderful man who takes his time to go to the support group meeting twice a month. I don't know of many other surgeons who would take the time to answer questions and not get paid for it at the same time. The office staff is very caring and friendly. Their practice is very big on aftercare and Dr. H was very informative and made me aware of all the risks involved with the surgery. I would rate him a perfect 10.

I originally heard of Dr. Hallowell through a friend of my sister's who had surgery with him. When I met him, I was extremely pleased. He definitely listens to what you have to say and he also definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to bariatric surgery. He's very sweet and funny, and makes you feel as comfortable as can be. He is the assistant professor of surgery at University Hospital in Cleveland, OH. I'd recommend him to anyone looking to have the surgery done. He's thorough and explains every risk and benefit there is. I feel very lucky to have had such a great experience with him.

My consultation with Dr. Hallowell back at the end of February went well. Actually my appt. was scheduled for March but the office called me with a cancellation.
It's hard to get a take on a person from one meeting but I'm hoping Dr. H will have a great bedside manner.
The office staff, namely Carol has been very helpful along with the other nursing staff, they were quite efficient sending in my paperwork to Qualchoice once I had given them everything from my end.

My first impression of Dr. Hallowell is that he was trustworthy and seemed to care about his patients. He wanted me to understand the risks involved and what would be required of me throughout this journey. I never felt judged or that I was just a number to him but rather that he was understanding and was genuine in the care that he shows for his patients. His staff was always polite and nice and most of all they were on top of everything. I haven't had surgery yet but will be going for my pre-op appointments in just a couple of weeks so I will know more about him and his staff after those meetings. I will be sure to post my response here. Trusting your surgeon and there staff is a large part of feeling comfortable enough to proceed with the surgery.

My first impression was that he was very caring and informative. After visiting him a number of times, I warmed up to him very well, and I understood that the things he wanted me to do where to help me have a better experience. His staff is very caring and understanding. They treat you like a person, not a number.

After care is very important to the untire staff. There is a structured aftercare program lasting 5 years, longer if needed. They offer pre-op support groups the 1st Monday of every month, post ops are encouraged to attend. There is also a post op group meeting the 3rd Monday of every month. So basically there are 2 helpful sessions a month for post op patients.

They do a very good job covering all risks and life changes of this surgery. It is discussed pre op, many times, and also post op.

Overall, Dr. Hallowell is a TEN in my book. He is there when I need him, so is his staff. my hospital stay was amazing. Tower 9 of University Hospital is the best! This is the most caring group of individuals I have ever met at any hospital. The nutrionist's ofice is even on that floor! So she is there your entire stay to monitor your liquids and answer any questions.
