Richard Shimer Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

I can't say enough about Dr. Shimer. He has a great bedside manner and never makes you feel he is too busy for your questions. He visited me often during my stay in the hospital. His staff, especially Gilda are wonderful too. Gilda went way beyond the call of duty to catch Dr. Shimer between operations to get him to write a refill for my pain medication. (Thanks Gilda!) I was completely confident with Dr. Shimer doing this surgery. It was great having the opportunity to meet so many of his satisfied patients before my surgery date. The support group was/is an awesome way to find the answers to my questions before starting the process for this surgery. I go for my two week check up tomorrow(March 29, 2004)and I am looking forward to weighing for a change. I think I have lost about 12 or 13 pounds. This surgery has gone far better than I anticipated even though I am still sore in the area where the stapler was inserted. All of the other sites are pretty much healed and pain free. If you want this operation I would suggest using Dr. Shimer if at all possible, just call Gilda and she will help you with everything! I really can not think if one thing negative to say about Dr. Shimer, his staff or the hospital and I wish to thank everyone who had to care for me in anyway during my surgery and hospital stay.
(One thing...make sure the nurse opens the relief valve on the drain bottle to break the vacuum before she removes the drain tube from your body. Otherwise it will feel like your insides are being sucked out!If it starts to hurt...stop the nurse and make sure everything is as it should be before letting the nurst proceed. It should come out pretty easy with just a weird squiggly feeling...not pain!)

Dr. Shimer is great! He didn't make me feel like a number. Had time to set and answer any questions I had. He let me know all the risks that were involved in this surgery. He also did a excellent job on my Lap. The incesion are so small. Dr. Shimer is a excellent Dr. and I trust him completely. The staff has been great! Always very friendly and eager to help. If I had to rate Dr. Shimmer I would give him a 10 on a scale 1-10. Anyone who wants to have WLS should see Dr. Shimer before considering out of town or state. I am also receiving great aftercare. I am so glad to have had the surgery and had Dr. Shimer and staff for their support and help..

My surgeon and staff were to good to be true!!!!! WONDERFUL, OUTSTANDING, CARING and most of all SUPPORTIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Funny, I got to the bottom of this page and it said you must have something negative to say. No person can be the best in all aspects. I want to say I totally disagree!!!! I had the best. Thanks!

I met Dr. Shimer on 4/24/03 for a group orientation and then for an individual exam. He is laid back and soft spoken. With regard to medical care, I have very little patience and tend to judge physicians and medical staff harshly due to past problems. Well, I like Dr. Shimer! He was not rushed in any way. He told all of us in the group that we can back out at any time all the way up to surgery time. And his staff is great! Gilda is absolutely the best insurance coordinator I have ever dealt with.
