I also thought that Dr. Keating was more interested in the surgery than the person. After my three week post-op visit today, my thoughts are quite different. He answered all of my and my wife's questions and seemed genuinely concerned that this be the start of a new life for me. He was very sociable and I was greatly impressed with getting to know him better. There is no doubt in my mind that Dr. Keating is a highly skilled surgeon, and I think he is a truly nice guy. Deb, his nurse, has also been very helpful for us. For anyone needing this life saving procedure, I highly suggest Dr. Keating.

One word of advise, if you have questions, ask. Dr. Keating has never acted like he needed to hurry off when I have had questions.

I would, after losing 44lbs in three weeks, give Dt. Keating an enthusiastic 10 out of 10 rating. If anyone wants to contact me about Dr. Keating, or the surgery, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

September 2, 2003 - My friend Brooke and I went to see Dr. Keating. I was on the exam table and Brooke was seated in a chair across from me. Dr. Keating walked in and immediately came up to me and introduced himself extending his hand. He then turned to Brooke and also introduced himself. He asked me if I had done a lot of research on weight loss surgery? Then asked if I knew anyone that had gone through this surgery? After my responses he said very matter of factly...I am here to tell you the risks. He was very straight forward with excellent eye contact and body language both of which let me know he truly cares. He explaned the procedure in detail and let me know exactly what to expect. If a person had walked into his office without doing any research, he would scare the hell out of you...but he wants to make sure you understand that this will not be a walk in the park. This is a permanent procedure and not a decision to be taken lightly. Dr. Keating made me feel confident in his abilities as a surgeon. Brooke is a pharmaceutical rep and has had to deal with surgeons and she was very impressed by Dr. Keating which made me feel even better.

Dr. Keating is a friendly personable man that I have complete faith in. He was my surgeon a few years ago and I was very impressed with him at that time. When I found out he was the only Dr. in Cedar Rapids currently performing this surgery, I was fine with it. His Nurse, Deb, is not the most friendly, but she has a very hard job keeping up with him, I'm sure. But whenever I had a question or possible problem after the surgery, she made sure he could see me asap. Dr. Keating does not provide a lot of aftercare information and would rather the patient do his/her homework and take advantage of the hospital dietician. I highly recommend Dr. Keating. He is extremely thorough during the operation and always has a warm smile to calm any worries.

I will be having my first consult on september 2nd.

I had my surgical consult with Dr. Robert Keating on June 4, 2003. I found Dr. Keating to be very understanding and compassionate. He was impressed with the amount of homework I had done prior to the appointment. (I submitted what he called a 5 page "essay" about my health and personal background, my motivation for the surgery, and my expectations. He said he wished all his patients would do that as it demonstrated I knew what I was getting into.) The office staff was very helpful. Again the research I had done proved to be beneficial. I think everyone had a genuine respect for that and knew I was not in there just looking for a "quick fix." At this point I would have to say there is nothing I didn't like about Dr. Keating. He was very thorough in his explanations and answered all my questions to my satisfaction. It did not feel like he was rushing me. The only thing I feel he lacked was a good understanding of the aftercare and anesthesia. He made numerous referals to dietician and anesthesiologist recommendations when I asked questions about those issues. I feel both his bedside manner and surgical competence are good.He was very knowledgable in talking about the procedures and risks. Also the fact that he himself has lost over 100 # in the past two years gives him the edge in dealing with his bariatric patients.

I would highly recommend Dr. Keating to anyone in the Cedar Rapids area who is contemplating WLS. Dr. Keating spent all the time necessary with me during the initial consultation, and answered each of my questions. My first impression of him was how young he appears. But doing a quick check of his surgery statistics, his expertise seems unquestionable. My PCP learned that his "numbers" are better than the national average. And this is a surgeon who's only done about 90 of these surgeries as of my surgery date.

His nurse Deb is usually quite helpful, though sometimes upon calling, it can seem like she would rather not be spending time on the phone. However, she's always returned my calls if need be.

My surgery seems to have gone without a hitch, and was performed on April 14th, 2003. The only downside to my experience is that unless you go in knowing everything you can from this site, you will be left with many questions that Dr. Keating does not seem to cover post-op. In otherwords, aftercare is not a strong point to his practice. However, in all fairness, I'm sure if you have a question, he or his nurse will be sure to get you and answer. I would like to see him and his staff come out with a booklet of what to expect after you begin recovery, and a good diet guide.

Although not as "personable" as I would like to see, on a scale of 1 - 10 with a ten being the highest, I would give Dr. Keating an overall rating of an 8. Surgically, he seems to have his stuff very together. And by outward appearances, my Open RNY incision was very straight and seems to be healing back together very nicely.

PRE-OP: I was very impressed with Dr. Keating. He was very knowledgable in the surgery and was very honest about every aspect of the surgery. Overall, I was very impressed with him. And most importantly, I trust him.

POST-OP: Very pleased with Dr. Keating's work. Surgery went perfect, recovery has been right on track; and the incision is VERY minimal (about 5-6inches long) and extremely straight. He did a great job cutting!! Honestly, I can't say anything negative about this process so far. I would recommend Dr. Keating to anyone, he is an awesome doctor!

If I could change one thing about the experience, I would have liked Dr. Keating to spend more time with me. But I understand he's a very busy man. :)

P.S. Don't let his age fool you. He knows what he's doing. :)

He was friendly enough and was very safety conscience. throughout my experience I felt that I never had enough time to speak to him about my concers while I was in the hospital. I dont think it is him personally, its just a surgeon thing. I would recommend him and have referred three people to him already. He does very little as far as aftercare so it is critical that you educate yourself on the nutrition and protien and diet issues for after surgery. He is very through about the risks and makes sure you understand the risks completely.

I have an issue with bedside manner in general and rating Dr. Keating on bedside manner I would give him a 5 out of a 10, not bad, but not overly impressive either. The bottom line is that I put my life in his hands and I felt I could completely trust in his surgical abilities.

Dr. Keating seems to be compassionate towards people who need the surgery and I also felt comfortable with asking him questions and the time he took to answer them. I am having surgery on 1/27/03 and will comment post-op.

I am happy with the care I have received from Dr. Keating. I feel that his patients do need to have other resources for information about diet, etc. to achieve the best results. He always asks if I have anyquestions and makes time to answer them at each appointment.

He was very nice. He is a young doctor but i feel comfortable having him as my surgeon. His staff were all very nice and i didnt have to wait to see him. His nurse Deb was very helpful she answered any remaining questions i had and she was very good about returning my phone calls. Dr.Keating was right up front with me about all the risks but i thought to myself not doing anything about my weight problem is just a big risk. Over all i would rate Dr.Keating right up there he made me feel like he truely does understand just what i am going thru.

Sept.3rd--- I saw Doctor K. he is such a caring doctor he dont ever rush you he answeres all my questions i have and he always has a big smile and is very soft spoken. All around just a great person.
