  • About Me
Todd Mason McCarty, MD, passed away on March 28, 2020, at the age of 57. He was born in Greeley, CO, on August 25, 1962. Todd grew up in Johnstown and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1980. He was a gifted student, he received his medical degree from UT Southwestern, garnering many academic awards along the way as well as receiving the highest scores on multiple nationally ranked exams. Dr. McCarty began performing bariatric surgery in 1998 after completing 8 years of surgical training. He trademarked and patented the Mini sleeve and was experienced with complex revision surgery. He was one of the first surgeons in the nation to integrate laparoscopy into bariatric surgery, introducing laparoscopic gastric bypass and later laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. He was dedicated to improvements in patient care, authored more than 50 scholarly articles, 9 book chapters and was frequently invited as an expert speaker and author. He trained hundreds of surgeons spanning over 20 states including many bariatric surgeons in DFW. Together with his wife Crystal Dawn McCarty, whom he married on August 10, 2015, Dr. McCarty had a successful career in bariatric surgery at his practice, McCarty Weight Loss Center & Lakewood Aesthetics. He was an ASMBS Master Surgeon of Excellence and a member of the Texas Medical Association. Dr. McCarty was a leader in his field and his many contributions will continue to benefit the medical community for years to come. Dr. McCarty had many passions outside of the professional realm. He had an appreciation for nature, well known for his love of dogs, gardening, painting and being outside working the grill. He loved studying science and building rockets, and could just as easily be found playing chess or cribbage as watching the UFC. He was a dedicated husband, father and surgeon, putting his whole heart into everything he did. Dr. McCarty was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn Mason McCarty and Delores Jenean Donahue. He is survived by his wife Crystal Dawn McCarty, sons Cristopher Mason McCarty, Brian Patrick McCarty and Joshua Jadon Brown, and his sister Robyn Allyson Herman. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and colleagues. A celebration of life will be planned for Dr. McCarty at a future date, but in the interim the family invites you to share a favorite memory or story about Todd in the comments below, and if you are able to, make a donation to a charity of your choice in his honor.
