I've only met him once, he seemed like a very busy man and not bashful about letting you know that he is. He did seem truly concerned about helping obese folks get a chance at having a normal lifestyle.

Hasn't changed yet.

They're very kind. They try to help you any way they can, esp. with insurance stuff.

Be direct, have your questions written down and be ready to answer his questions honestly. He doesn't beat around the bush.

I don't know yet.

He was very direct and honest about the risks involved in having the surgery. He let me and my husband know right up front that there is always the chance of complications and went right down the line of them to let us know what they were.

Between a 1 and 10, 10 being the highest, I'd say around a 7.

If you really want the ideal doc, you'd obviously want both surgical competence and bedside manner. But, if I had to choose, I'd choose the competence any day.

Dr. Sorensen is part of Hurley Center For Comprehensive Weight Loss in Flint, MI. He is a trauma surgeon at Hurley Hospital and also a bariatric surgeon. I liked him immediately. He has a wonderful sense of humor. He put me at ease and answered every question I had written down. He explained the procedure completely. I also met with a counselor and a nutritionist at my initial consult. His staff has done all the work for me. They have taken care of all the insurance work and approval. Every time I called for a progress report they were always patient and supportive. We now have a Hurley support group in Lansing and it is wonderful.

I really liked my first visit with Dr. Sorensen. I have only ment with him this one time so far. I really like the fact that he was a trama surgeon for several years before going into this practice.

I met with Dr. Sorensen, Vel Damon (bariatric Counselor) and Jill Alcock (dietitian) on 9/11/02. It was a GLORIOUS day for me. My Mom, sister, and a dear friend came with me to be 'extra ears'. I am so nerved up about this event in my life I wanted to play it safe by having others present to hear what was said and mull over the information with me later.
I found all of the Hurley Center staff to be pleasant and kind. They were very direct about the risks involved and the need for lifestyle changes. The support group idea is pushed as needed and quite frankly I agree. Since I started flirting with the idea of having RNY surgery I have encountered numerous people who have shared valuable information regarding what to expect prior to and post surgery - be it insurance issues or eating modifications. Please add me to your prayer list for a surgery date to come soon.

6/26/02 I met with Dr. Sorenson, a nutritionist and a bariatric councelor at the Hurley Center. They were very nice, but very busy as he was the only one of four surgeons to be working this week. My appointment was at 1:15, but I didn't get in until after 2:00. After screening us separately, they put four patients (me+3) into a little conference room. and did a nice little informative presentation and Q&A. They were very informative and explained everything well, including the risks. I had already done a lot of researching before so I was prepared. They said it would now be three to six months before they could get me a surgery date because of they needed to submit my case to my insurance(which I thought had already been done), and due to the fact that they are doing a very steady busisness, which was evident by all the post-ops that came and went. One thing I have going for me is that I have already had my psych. eval., which the others had not. So it may not be quite as long.
Dr. Sorenson seemed pretty competent. I had learned that he was primarily a trauma surgeon before. He said that he had done some bariatric surgery years ago and, then started to do them three years ago when Hurley opened up their obesity center. He said that they will use two surgeons and thaty they check everyone for gall stones when they go in. If there are any they remove the gall bladder right then along with the RNY.
The counselor (forgot her name) was a woman who had the RNY 6 years ago and looked great. She had a lot of advice and gave us a list of support groups, She also gave us liuttle insulated bottles to practice sipping from as she said the better prepared you are the easier it is to get used to after surgery.
All in al it was a very positive experience and it solidified my resolved to have the surgery.

My surgeon is Victor Sorensen, M.D. who is with the Hurley Center for Comprehensive Weight Loss in Flint, Michigan.
Dr. Sorensen was very nice and easy to talk with. He seemed very knowledgeable. He thoroughly explained the surgery and the risks and benefits of the surgery. The clinic was very well designed for us "larger sized people". The furniture was oversized and very comfortable. The Office staff was very pleasant. Dr. Sorensen is also a highly skilled trauma surgeon so I really believe that I am in very good hands. I have spoken with a recent RNY patient and she told me Dr. Sorensen was wonderful after the procedure. The Hurley Center for Comprehensive Weight Loss has an excellent program and a well structured follow up program with monthly meetings. You can call their office anytime and get answers to your questions. They have people involved with their program who have had the RNY and know what you can expect after surgery. The only drawback that I encountered was that the office staff did not tell me that I needed to get them copies of my medical records. They have an outside company that does their insurance prequalification so they don't do it here locally. I have been in contact with the insurance office a few times and they have been very helpful but I believe that I could have been approved much sooner had I been given a "checklist" of steps to take at the first consultation.
