J. Ryland Scott Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Scott and his staff was wonderful! Starting the process my husband and I attended the informational session. At that session we learned about all the different types of surgeries and benefits/drawbacks of each one. We also met the different staff members that would be helping us throughout our process. Of course we all know that insurance companies make you jump through hoops to have surgery approved, but I truly felt that Jennifer (insurance lady...sorry for lack of better term) handled everything wonderfully. She kept track of all of our requirements and made sure we knew what the next step was. The nutritionist was wonderful as well. Dr. Scott was down to earth and very approachable. I did not feel intimidated as I thought that I would. He is very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions and concerns. He recommended a different surgery than what we went in wanting. He clearly explained why we should go with it and said that he was not trying to change our minds just to change our minds. He truly wanted us to choose the surgery that would be the most beneficial for us. On the day of my husband's surgery he was VERY nervous. Annette, part of the care team was very understanding and helped calm his nerves with encouraging words. Dr. Scott made sure we knew exactly what was going on throughout our hospital stay. He had a great bedside manner. My husband and I both had surgery so we became familiar with the nursing staff. We could really tell that they enjoyed their job and cared for the patients. Our hospital stay could not have been more comfortable. Our hospital room was more like a hotel room than a hospital. They took care of our every need. Any concerns we had were addressed promptly and everything was explained very thoroughly. Our visits post-op went very well. All our questions were answered. If we had questions that needed answers, nurses would call back quickly. There is an aftercare program with support group meetings. We have not been to one as of yet although we are required to attend at least 2 or 3 after surgery. We live about an hour and a half away and they are in the evening, so by the time we get off of work, we cannot make it. We plan on making our next check ups on a day where there is a meeting so that we can attend. I really cannot think of anything negative about Dr. Scott, his staff and the program as a whole. I feel that I was thoroughly educated prior to surgery. I was not shocked when I had some difficulties afterward. I knew it would be hard work and that it is a lifestyle change. I've heard others complain that they did not have a clue what was going on with their body afterward. My husband and I have been very pleased!
