i saw dr. monash in the beginning of 2012, when i finally got health insurance in the state of arizona.

he suggested that i should get the gastric sleeve, or gastric by-pass as opposed to the lap band. since my insurance didn't cover the sleeve at the time, i was left with the option of the by-pass.

i had to do my whole six month supervised by a physician weightloss thing, and this fell off my priority list.

finally, in 2013, i started going back to a weightloss clinic (for lap band specifically). they had me jump through the hoops and i was very close to having my surgery done with them.

however, i had switched jobs and my old insurance fell through and that's when i decided that with my new insurance i would go back to see dr. monash. this time around, my insurance would pay for the gastric sleeve.

i am so glad that i waited and everything fell into place with dr. monash. i feel that he is an excellent doctor and surgeon. he cares so much about his patients and their success. his bedside manner is the best i've ever seen in a physician.

dr. monash also hand picks his staff, who are all very friendly and efficient at their jobs. it's never hard to get an appointment with him, and any time i had questions or concerns about billing, scheduling, and the surgery, someone was always ready to answer my questions.

his new offices are located at camp lowell & swan and he performs the surgeries at TMC.

the day before surgery, we went over any last minute questions i had and he reassured me everything was going to be fine.

the day of surgery, he met with me before they took me in to the operating room and reassured me again.

everything went so smoothly. my recovery period at TMC was good. the nursing staff took great care of me and i was glad my surgery happened at their facility. the room i had was a private room and the nurses checked on me frequently enough to where i never felt neglected (all i really wanted to do was sleep, the anesthesia kicked my ass).

the follow up the next morning before discharge from the hospital went well. and the follow up two weeks post-op went well, too.

dr. monash has never quoted a number that i should reach. his concern is that you're getting healthier. he has a very detailed and structured aftercare program. a booklet is given to you with instructions on what to eat, and what days to start eating.

if you're in tucson, arizona (or anywhere in arizona for that matter) i would highly recommend dr. monash as your surgeon for bariatric surgery. he is the best in what he does and you won't regret being under his care!

Surgeon was fabulous, very helpful and friendly. He made sure all my questions were answered, before and after surgery, and I appreciate his focus on feeling healthy rather than aiming for specific numbers. The office staff is wonderful, especially Binda, the insurance coordinator. I would recommend the whole office in a heartbeat.

The folks at the hospital where the surgeries are performed (TMC), however, were frustrating to work with, however. While I was there post-op, my glasses went MIA (my vision is very poor and I was nearly blind, which left me terrified) and I could never find my morphine button-- probably because I couldn't see more than 4" in front of my own nose. Additionally, I was never put on my CPAP, which left the nurses cranky about my oxygen levels. I was unable to reach a call button, too hoarse to call for a nurse, and so tangled up in tubes and wires that I couldn't get up and stumble to the nurses' station for help. Surgery recovery is rough enough as is, but the whole thing left me feeling terrified and alone.
