During my first visit Dr. Pender had a group of interns or students and I could tell that it was not a pleasant experience for him. He's very straight forward and got down to business, but took the time to explain everything and answer all my questions. Everyone associated with his office and Brody School of Medicine have been terfic. They all are pleasant an make the extra effort to ensure that my experience with them was pleasant.rnI would definitely recommend him to anyone having the surgery. Their program does a good job of preparing you before and after surgery.rnTo sum it up Dr. Pender may not be the most talkative, but when it comes to business he's one of the best in my mind.

He is a very knowledgeable surgeon. He is direct and to the point (very clinical). He makes it clear that surgery alone is not a cure and that it is a lifestyle change that needs to take place. He clearly explained the risks involved with the surgery. The fact is that Pender knows what he is doing and I would rather have that than a doctor that acts like a politician when he sees you but sucks as a surgeon. Overall my experience has been A+

Met him for the first time on April 21, 2008. He was very pleasant, unlike what I had heard on other blogs and boards. Maybe I caught him in a good mood. He didn't mind all the many questions I was asking and took time to answer them. I think he will be great. I have heard as a surgeon, he is one of the best!rnrnI saw him again on July 21st. He is very nice! Always takes time to answer my questions and never acts like I am taking up too much of his time...and beleive me....I ASK QUESTIONS...LOL

we havent talked a lot yet. the one time i saw him he was very nice. he explained i needed the gastric instead of the lap band. he told me all the benefots of having the surgery and the risks. we havent had much of a chance to talk about the after care. he did say i had to be willing to change my eating habits and it was a lifetime commitmant. he is very straight and to the point.

MY FIRST IMPRESSION OF HIM WAS THAT HE WAS VERY TECHNICAL AND PROFESSIONAL. HE LISTENED TO MY CONCERNS AND QUESTIONS. I APPRECIATED HIS NO NONSENSE APPROACH. FUTURE PATIENTS SHOULD KNOW THAT HE IS NOT TOO PERSONAL IN THE BEGINNING. HE WARMS UP AFTER AWHILE. THE WHOLE ECU BRODY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE PROGRAM IS WONDERFUL. IT IS VERY STRUCTURED AND HIGHLY ACCREDITED. HE WAS BETTER AT SURGICAL COMPETENCE THAN BEDSIDE MANNER, BUT HIS NURSES AND ASSISTANCE MADE UP FOR IT.

My first impression of Dr. Pender was a bit less than positive. He was a bit too aloof for my taste. But over time, I came to really respect him. He is generally kind. He was very good with my family after my procedures, explaining the results to them and making sure they knew I was ok. During the pre-op process, he was very good about making sure that he answered any questions that I had and never seemed to be impatient with me for asking. My one caution would not be about Dr. Pender, but about his intern, a young man whose name I can't recall at the moment. He is very eager, I'm sure, but the result, in my experience, was that he did not listen to what I was trying to say, often cutting me off mid-sentence or being dismissive. rnrnDr. Pender is very attentive, post-op. I came in for regular appointment during the first year, and when a minor complication arose, he was all over it without hesitation. I will also be seeing him once a year for the duration, which doesn't seem to be the case with some other friends I know who have had the surgery. rnrnHe was very frank about the risks, never downplaying them compared to the benefits. He made clear that most were rare, but he also made equally clear that the risks were real. I appreciated that candor.
