Barnes-Jewish Hospital (COE) Hospital
I was there over the Christmas holiday and while the 2 days in ICU were great, the regular unit staff were absolutly terrible. They would take an hour or more to answer a call light. They left me on a bed side toilet so long that both legs fell asleep and had to be massaged to allow me to walk back to bed. In 3 days in the regular unit I did not get cleaned and only got 1 change of gowns. They did not change me bedding and when my wife picked me up to take me home there was feces and blood on my sheets. Also while transporting me from ICU to the regular unit the guys moving my bed ran me into the wall 5-6 times even after being asked to be careful
The hospital is horribly understaffed. There aren't enough nurses to care for the patients, so you're left waiting for over twenty minutes for help if you fall or can't move. I had a particularly bad experience with a few nurses, but, generally, even the good ones don't have the time to give you the care you need. They don't have time to bathe you even though they're supposed to, for instance, and if you don't have a family member to stay with you, you're just out of luck. There are no private rooms available, and family members aren't allowed to stay overnight in a shared room. Also, they don't have pads/diapers/undergarments/anything large enough for most bariatric patients. I'm on the "small" end for an obese person, and they could barely accomodate me! Most dangerously, the kitchen doesn't know how to provide the correct diet. They twice sent me meals with sugar or with solid food that I couldn't digest, and, one day, both meals were inedible for me, but the nurses couldn't procure replacements so I had nothing all day but apple juice. DO NOT choose this hospital unless you have an assertive, knowledgeable family member available to spend as much time as possible at your side and advocate for you.
Days were great. I suspect short staffing at night. Alarms on all equipment of room mate went off loudly and constantly all night. Waited 6 hours to get into a chair then once I got there it was a long time before anyone checked on me. Got extremely cold and an aide said she was bringing me a blanket. Never materialized. Day nurses were exceptional. Food looked good but I wasn't hungry.
