Pre-op staff was wonderful. Nice clean environment with lots of people that care. Very sensitive to surgical procedures, not just those for MO. To be honest, I do not remember much about the post-op/recovery... I guess I can say that pain control was WELL DONE! I have nothing negative to say about it. Med/surg floor... now here is where it all changed... My first day I had a couple of filipeno nurses that could not have been more rude or unresponsive to my needs. They "forgot" to give me my pain pump (it sat on the pump stand just out of reach) and when I asked for it, they were very nasty about it telling me I was "getting pain medicine." They were watching some tennis match on TV, which was obviously more important than me. When I began vomitting, they propped a kidney basin next to my head AND LEFT ME ALONE. I woke up later more coherent and found that the basin was still there and had spilled all over my pillow and sheets. The pulse ox blipped incessantly, and needlessly. Seems to me the filipeno nurses didn't know how to handle the machines, because when the night shift came on it was a whole different story. It wasn't until the night shift came in that the real care started. I had an american male nurse and I think a female CNA (I saw the male nurse more). They were great! Pain control went up considerably, they got me cleaned up and untangled. I was finally comfortably positioned in bed. They cleaned me up a little bit and about 5 am when I asked to get out of bed for a little bit. They happily helped. I was up for about 20 minutes before I was tired again.
The next day I had another american nurse team, a male RN and a female CNA. They were WONDERFUL! I got a shower, they stripped the puke soaked bed. They were wonderful! Pain control was great. Next night, same male night nurse as before... again great. Very responsive to my roommate who was also GB post-op. Day 3 was also a good american nurse team. Got me out of there quickly and walked me to Bartlett House. :-)
Hospital in general... same day surgery is nice and sparkly clean. But med surg is a different story. It is old and worn out. The waiting room chairs are largely stained and grimy. The patient room that I was in had one phone line and one TV, for two patients. Small bathroom, and the shower was down the hall. BUT, they do offer a lot that other hospitals don't. There was an older computer for the internet to send e-mail in the solarium. The solarium itself was stocked with all sorts of stuff to entertain people while they wait... Nintendo 64, two TV's (one hooked up to a DVD player), books, magazines and a great view. Also, they have Bartlett House, which is a wonderful "hotel" for pre/post op patients that have been discharged from the hospital but still can't leave town yet. Mixed review, yes... but I felt it was needed to thoroughly explain my findings and experience. OH... and Dr. Miller was GREAT!

The only real problem that I had here, was with all of the nurses after surgery. The ones in short stay & the OR were awesome! But the other nurses would come in, wake me up & ask me how come I wasn't sleeping - then when I was emotional & started crying they called me a "cry baby" & said that I "worried too much". When I asked one - if I could switch to a different bed other then the bari-bed - she told me "no" because I was too fat & would break it (even though my surgeon told me that I would've been fine since I weighed considerably less then most having the surgery). Then on my discharge I had a nurse who literally tore my iv out of my arm - it hurt for over a week - I could hardly bend it!

The nurses had phillipeno food parties all night long and were very loud. Sleep is not happening while there unless really drugged. The parties were nightly my enitre stay, and they would laugh and talk extremely loudly up and down the halls. The CNA's were good, however. YOU NEVER TAKE A BP WITH A IV IN THE SAME ARM. try and tell them that, and you get dirty looks.

A couple of the nurses were terrible. Of course they had a star too, Audry R. she was amazing. But for the most part they did not know hardly anything about WLS. One nurse was pushing juice on me and when I balked about the sugar she told me I could eat cake. She was the worst and of course I had to have her twice.

At times I felt if my family was not there to help me I would have dehydrated or died!

Treat the CNA's well and you will get great care. They are very attentive to your needs. This is expecially import as the nurses may be occupied with other patients.

The CNAs accompanied me on my walks, responded to every page, checked on me periodically, and got the nurse quickly any time I needed assistance the CNA could not provide.

The nurses and doctors were excellent... I wasn't able to get a private room the first night, and was stuck with a psychotic woman screaming on the phone to every person she could get a hold of at 3 a.m. But.. after she left, it was very quiet, and very nice.

I have had two major procedures at this hospital and both have been very positive experiences. The nurses are great and the entire staff is very accommodating.
