Ellis Hospital Hospital

Well, sleep was a problem because like every 15-30mins I was awoken with either the machines going off and beeping(due to low batteries) , or a nurse coming in to see either my roomate or my self for vitals.
As far as teaching me how to get up and out of bed no one did. I had to figure out how to get out of my bed by myself and was rather miffed and scared because I thought I might have hurt something in my stomach a few times. I was also given lortab in the hospital which in my pre-op paper work I clearly stated I have a problem w/ lortab and headaches.. Needless to say I ended up getting very, very, Ill from a major migraine(the worst in my life) and I was not happy...Most all of the nurses were nice and I just wish they had taught me how to get up properly... I felt like a contortionist!

The hospital is working on making accomedations for weight. Recently they added testing equipment to handle patients that were over 300 lbs.
The regular staff really seemed to know about my surgery and what to expect and were supportive. The hospital does hire some temp. staff from an agency that did not respond quickly nor knew proceedures and expectations of my doctor.
I had a private room the whole time, which was great. There was some hall noise, but that is common for any place. I was too tired most of the time to notice though.
I loved the pain pump right after surgery, it helped a LOT. After I was off of that though I had a couple of times where I requested pain meds. and had to wait 20 or 30 minutes for them to arrive. Frustrating when in pain.
The hospital is good about allowing visitors right away and seemed to understand how important family and friends are to recovery. I was told though that to have a visitor be given information about room location, or even that you were a patient there that you would have to inform them of who the visitor was. This was not that case as a friend called for me and the operator told her I was there, gave her my room number and my direct phone number. Which was fine because I wanted her to visit, but what if I had not???
There were a few nurses and techs. that were great, visiting some when i was alone and awake, walking with me when I had to do my laps in the hall, helpiing with personal needs, etc.
I would go back to this hospital again.

The hospital was okay, but again, so common in this situation...they were understaffed. I had to wait a few times to be un-hooked to go to the bathroom, and I would have felt better if some of the nurses assigned to me were the big-beefy type. That is just me, though. Glad to be home!
