Mercy Medical Center Hospital
This hospital has a full wing that caters to surgical patients, including bariatric. The staff was kind, friendly, and very attentive to my every need. The rooms were very spacious, with a three person padded bench and recliner, and when our pastor and wife arrived at the same time as other guests, they immediately brought in extra chairs from a conference room so all could sit comfortably! EVERYONE cheered you on as you walked the halls, and made you feel like you were superwoman for your efforts! The hospital has a dept. that checks in with every patient to see if they are happy and having their needs met. Mercy is the best hospital I have EVER been in, and I can't say enough good things about the care I recieved there! Highly recommend their surgical wing!
Worst hospital experience I have ever had. Nurses RARELY checked on me. Dietary trays came with sugar products - nothing was sugar free. CNA who brought my dinner tray in one night emptied my catheter then grabbed my tray and put in on my table without washing her hands. When xray came in to get me the guy said, "Are you Martha or something?" Not very reassuring. The xray tech in the room was a condescending twit. If it weren't for the Doctor and his great PA I don't think I would have made it. I think it is a shame he is associated with a place such as Mercy Medical Center
At Mercy: overall there were some wonderful staff who really showed that they cared. These staff were excellant at their jobs. However, there a few who were so indifferent to overshadow the good ones. There were too many times that I had to wait for help when it was very important for me to be able to go to the bathroom. When I would not get a response, then I would have to disconnect myself from the various things to go. I just gave up on calling for help and did it myself. This worked fine for me cause I was determined and strong but this could have been very dangerous for someone weak and unbalanced. I would ask for something, be told that they would get it and not see or hear from anyone for awhile. However, those nurses who were excellant and caring should not be ignored. Their loving care made a big difference in my recovery. I appreciate all that they did to help me.
Overall, my stay was pleasant. There bariactric specialist was very, very nice. She was very willing to please. There were a couple other nurses also that obviously have been trained on obesity sensitivity. As for the CNA's I think they could use some better training in that area. I also believe that there should be better privacy when entering a patients room, for example a drawn curtain. There were a few times I had to wait over a half a hour for someone to tend to my needs, that shouldn't be. Also when I 1st got to my room, the compression stockings were to be started and I was to be instructed on the inhaling device, neither were started until 8 hours later. After my family arrived and brought it to the nurses attention. Just a few notes of places that could use improvement. Would I come back, probably. Thanks Jennifer and Jana.
Most of the staff was excellent. One ICU nurse was not so great. I was told I needed the compression wraps for my legs to prevent blood clots and the dangers they can cause-when one compression wraps slid down and was not performing its function- I asked this ICU nurse to adjust the wraps- and she said (in front of my wife no less) "That's not really my job but I'll do it anyway." Since it was impressed upon me the importance of the compression wraps- it seems that it was (or should be) her job to ensure they are functioning properly and adjust them if need be. BUT, she was just one nurse who may have been overworked that day (at least I hope that was the case). Another nurse was a staffing nurse (meaning she wasn't hospital staff but called in from a nursing staffing source) and didn't seem to be to familiar w/ hospital requirements, etc...BUT again EVERYONE elese was wonderful and my stay was overall GOOD.
What a joke of a hospital. Sure, on the outside it would appear to be a place of healing and care but enter the doors to another dimension. The first day was alright, I imagine because I was still pretty drugged up. The second day, when it was time for my swallow test the rad. assistant came in and said, "I am here for Joyce or something." Hello? Are the lights on there, dude? My name is Sonia and until you know who I am have a great day yourself. =)
Later that same day I found my vein blown and for over an hour-and-a-half I waited for a nurse to check this out and to turn off the iv machine that was beeping every 48 seconds.
I could go on and on about my experience but will just conclude that on my way out I was humiliated in cramming into a child sized wheelchair on an extremely bumpy road with a not so happy cna. (I am 5'8" and 250 so I wasn't so terribly obese that I totally filled up a regular wheelchair, I had been in one about 2 months previous and fit just fine.)
BEWARE OF THIS HOSPITAL! I wouldn't even send my worst enemy here.
Doctor Valentine would probably triple his practice if it weren't for his association with that dumpy place.
