University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (COE) Hospital

In general, everything was great. My word of advise is ask for a fan early and keep her running all the time if you're a hot body and question the nurses. Most of the nurses were excellent, but there was a girl there, possibly a CNA or student, that honestly had no clue what she was doing. Question your care if it seems inconsistant with the information you've been given, be sure to have someone with you in the room to help you keep on top of things, too. I had no problems when I was there except from the inept girl on 2nd shift, but it was pretty quiet since it was just after Christmas when I was there.

Day staff was excellent! Sometimes for night staff I got fill ins from other hospitals and floors and they weren't as good. I had one nurse who never came to check on me, or even came in a reasonable time after I called her. So, eventually, I'd end up getting up and walking to the nursing station to go find her. Then, she'd show me how to do something (like reset my pump) so I wouldn't have to bother her again. The other thing with the UIHC floor was just to know that between 7-8 am, there are staff meetings and its hard to get anyone to come into your room for nonemergency type stuff. Early mornings are just really busy with the staff changeovers. It's fine, as long as you know it, then you can make sure you have enough pain meds or whatever you might need.
