West Virginia University Hospital Hospital
I received excellent care during my post op stay. There was 3 nurses that stood out during my stay. Tammy, Jordan, and Dani made sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed as well as answered any questions that I had. Tammy also was caring enough to make sure my daughter, who was caring for me while in the hospital, was taken care of too. That is going above and beyond the call of duty! Thanks for the excellent care WVU.
Overall, I think they did a good job. They had a nursing shortage my first day post op so I had an orthopedic nurse instead of a bariatric nurse. She did a good job and it was ok since I am a nurse myself. I was upset with them though, I had a complication in the recovery room and they did not discuss it with hy husband or myself. I only knew because I'm a nurse and remembered some of the conversation I heard. Then a few months later, my physician resigned so I have not gone back to a bariatric surgeon for follow up. I do follow with my primary care physician for lab work.
I wasn't that impressed with it. Due to being a collage as well as a hospital when their football team had their first game I did not see a nurse for 6 hours . I was almost given two blood thinning shots in the same day due to lack of paperwork. Beside a few small things everything was fine and my surgeon was wonderful..
WVU hospital is a very good place to have WLS. The pre-op teaching to Same Day Surgery interview was excellent. I felt they prepared me well for what to expect. We were given a very early arrival time (5:30 a.m.), and weren't taken back to prep until nearly 7 a.m. Considering we had a 1 1/2 hour drive, this could have been given more consideration, however, having worked in a SDS, I understand that you get patients ready as you can...Communication was good with my family for the most part, they should have been kept better informed regarding my stay in recovery (doc told them they would see me in 30 minutes, it was 3 1/2 hours later...) The staff on 7th floor were friendly, efficient for the most part....but my last morning I waited 1 1/2 hour for pain medicine..unforgivable!! Over all they were very busy (it is a trauma unit!), but did a good job anyway. The night staff were excellent...caring and compassionate. I would recommend Ruby Memorial to any person considering WLS.
