Vitamin B12 deficiencies are common with gastric bypass because the small gastric pouch does not produce intrinsic factor necessary for Vitamin B12 absorption. Studies have found that B12 supplements of 100 to 350 micrograms (mcg) [Building Blocks multiple contains 200 micrograms] is effective in preventing deficits in up to 95% of patients. Some patients, however, may also need or prefer to take Vitamin B12 shots monthly (1000 mcg) or to use Vitamin B12 sublingually (under the tongue) to prevent deficiencies. Deficits in B12, if left untreated, can cause a number of health problems.
