Protein drink question....

Are protein shakes really necessary for anything other than protein? I get all my protein a day (100+) with just chicken, turkey, beef, fish, cheese, etc.. Should I still be drinking atleast 1 protein shake a day for any other reason?
TIA :)

Not really. If your labs are returning protein serum close to 7, albumin in the 4s and prealbumin near the top of the range you're fine nutritionally. If you're having trouble controlling cravings and hunger, protein shakes may help.

Protein Coffee

1 - 20 oz shaker cup with wire ball
4 to 6 oz of 1/2 & 1/2, soy or almond milk, or Lactaid milk
1 to 1 1/2 scoops of IDS Vanilla-Cinnamon protein powder (Champion Nutrition Chocolate, Nectar Cappuccino, Jay Robb vanilla, etc.)
{shake} until blended
Pour into extra large mug
Add 9 to 10 oz of hot brewed coffee (decaf or reduced caffeine) [hot chai tea]
{stir}

Add hot liquid to cold liquid to avoid lumps. Keep the protein slurry below 160 degrees.

Thanks for this recipe! I am not much of a coffee drinker but people rave about protein coffee so I am willing to give it a try.

You might also try hot chai tea instead of coffee in this recipe.

If you can do it without protein drinks, then don't torture yourself another day.

I only do protein shakes on days when I can't get my 100+ grams by eating or just don't feel much like eating more that day . .and that isn't often. It is definitely possible to do it without shakes & many here do. There is no reason why you need them otherwise.

Amy-

If you're getting in all your protein just from food, then shakes are optional.  I just happen to *love* my High Protein Decaf Hazlenut Iced Coffee, so I make it part of my maintainance plan.

Absorption rates vary depending on cc length and individual chemistry.  My cc is only 75 cm and I'm a bit more malabsorptive than many DSers.  Revision is out of the question.  Insurance won't pay for it, and I'd rather manage the extra nutritional needs than get cut again.

I did ask for a shorter common channel, and my surgeon said 75 is as low as she'd go, depending on how I measured out.
