I wanted to know if Dumping Syndrome is forever a possiblity or is it only while you are healing.  I wanted to ask at my last info session and forgot?

Just curious!

Completely depends on the individual.  Approximately 30-40% of RNY patients will experience dumping syndrome - so lots of people never do at all!

Here is some good info:

Some of us too, experienced it early out a few times and then once in a while if we ate something REALLY high in sugars.  I was that sort of dumper - VERY rarely.  I prayed I would dump to keep me away from the sugars but it was seriously, a handful of times that I dumped my first year.

Others are so sensitive that they dump forever and get sick with even large amounts of certain fruits. Everyone is different so you don't know how you will be until you have surgery and live it post op!

But now I am reactive hypoglycemic so I get sick on sugars that way.

If you eat like you will dump, you'll set yourself up for success. :)  Sugar is definitely the enemy!

I couldn't agree more Dawn!  Hence, I haven't eaten refined sugar in 5+ years, don't miss it one bit. :)

You are the superstar Karen.

I struggle with sugar every day and I see new post ops in my group eating it right away.  My first year I avoided it fairly well but I see new post ops struggling early with sugar.  One dumped her first day home eating a regular popsicle. I kid you not!

Scary!!  I worry for them because they are struggling with eating Timbits at 2 weeks out.  What is it going to be like for them at 3 months out, 6 months, 9?

I worry a lot because I know the hold that the Sugar**** gets on people. I live it every day!  Sugar is the enemy!

I'm no superstar, trust me. If salt caused dumping, I'd be in deep **** LOL

ETA:  I know what you're saying regarding new-ops.  I just don't get people's choices sometimes.

When I found out that I had diabetes in '07 I was in complete denial, ate like there was no tomorrow, couldn't care less if I was diagnosed or not - until one day my doc called and said, you're last blood work shows you keep climing and if your next results at still as high or higher, we will have no choice but to put you on insulin.  Well, let me tell, don't know why now but that call, ouf!  scared the bejesus out of me.  I was in restaurant (fast food chains) every single day, I should have bought shares...lol...anyways, I totally stopped, cold turkey...since November '10, I never went back to a restaurant unless eating salmon with steamed veggies, etc (healthy) and never nothing over 3g of sugar ever came back in my house...lol...and the best part of it, never craved it - thank goodness for Crystal Light...lol.....and lost 74lbs so far and I didn't start Optifast yet...lol...can't wait!

My gosh, you're WAY ahead of the game!  The way you're eating and limiting sugars is fabulous!

Karen I don't think that some people get it. They had the operation thinking it was going to be the mircle cure to there weight problems. They just don't want to put the work into it or make the life changes. It seems lately there are more more people out there making wrong choices. I have taken your attitude and just walked away from the sugar and deep fry food i will not dare touch. You have to be ready to change and by the looks of things some people are not ready.
