I too had the RNY because of GERD and Barrett's esophogus..but my friend who had hers 5 weeks before me, chose the RNY because of the dumping syndrome with sugar..she wanted to be accountable and if she dumped with sugar, that would make her to eat sugar.

Partially it was because my niece had RNY 10 years ago and I had seen her great success at keeping the weight off. I have lost a lot of weight in my life, just never kept it off. I had dealt with my mental issues, I was eating fairly healthy, my blood works were great etc., but my body wasn't cooperating with losing the weight. I felt I needed the malabsorption to get me started...

I had no co-morbidities at all driving me to RNY.  I chose it because I figured if I was going to permanently alter myself I wanted to make sure I gave myself the highest chance of success.  I'd been MO for decades!  I wanted to make sure my head moved into weight loss mode as quickly as possible and RNY seemed like the option that would get me to that space.  So far, I'm super, super, super happy!
