What's the deal with fruit?

This question is mostly for the vets. From reading the posts in the last 5-6 weeks I see most of you are opposed to fruit. My nutritionist, at the last appt, told me she wants me to have protein, veggies AND fruit. I'm not questioning her expertise but I wanted to ask those of you who have already gone through this and have been successful in losing weight and reaching goal, how much fruit do you actually eat? I've been including some raspberries and blackberries but I am hesitant. Please advise and TIA!

I'm not so taboo about fruit. I have about 15 raspberries nearly everyday in my yogurt. Beats eating a blueberry muffin with my yogurt.

occasionally I'll eat a banana, pear, orange, apple or grapes. I can go weeks with none or go through a spell where I'll eat 1 piece a day for a bit. If I'm not on a fruit kick, then I'm probably on veggie kick. I never get both in daily.

I'd rather reach for a piece of fruit then hit a vending machine for some other type of junk.

I should add, I didn't eat fresh fruit for a LONG time post op. Early on I only recall canned peaches very rarely when I needed something sweet. (Canned because it's the only way I like peaches- and it was soft enough so that I wasn't as concerned about digestion). Fresh fruit didn't come into play until I was at least a year out.

Fruits have sugar. Pure sugar. Fruits have more fiber- but our body really does not care where it gets the sugar from. Sugar is sugar. When trying to lose weight- I limit sugar. Any sugar.

I eat more fruits when my weight is low so I can gain some weight. Really.

When trying to lose weight - I limited fruits to 1 cup serving per week. That was my serving of sweets - desserts. And mostly berries.

Now I am at goal and I don't eat dairy or grains. Not many veggies. I eat berries. Rather a lot comparing with others. But not every day. A good only if my weight is below middle level in my range, close to my low weight.

Again- no eating yogurt or drinking milk- leaves space and calories/carbs for fruits.

I don't eat high sugar fruits like grapes, banana, or pears, oranges, etc. Apples and plums bother my gut. I eat some other fruits, but less soften, and mostly a bite or 2 - as an addition to my meal. If my meal is very heavy in proteins and not enough carbs- I may add a bite of pineapple, or 1/2 kiwi.

Currently I maintain at 145- 149. When my weight drops below 147 I may eat more fruits. If it gets too close to 149- I don't.

I but enough fruits once a week for a week. Then once that is gone - no more for that week. If I have some left - I freeze it and use in shakes out to flavor my water. Really nice. Then I can eat the left over fruits.

OP-listen to this VET.

Chances are you could have PCOS or metabolic syndrome. Those conditions make one very sensitive to glucose and increase insulin spikes. Increased insulin is then linked to obesity (cuz your body is trying to store the sugar as fat) and other hormonal disorders. When I eat low carb/low GI-my testerone levels are normal. When I eat lots of fruits, starches (bread cracker potatoes, potato chips), rice and pasta, my T levels were that of a 17 year old boy. I had the body hair (manly treasure trail), hair on my face, boobs, and legs to prove it to.

Fruit can have lots of good things in it (water, minerals, vitamins, fiber) but you MUST pick the right ones. Apples, pears berries...those are safe. Things like pineapples, peaches, cherries (how I love cherries) typically are medium to high GI and cause insulin spikes.

Depending how you cook, you will not believe the sweetness you can get out of veggies. Carrots onions...when you cook them down they CARMELIZE with the right technique and you can taste their inherent sweetness.

This weekend, I am making a spaghetti meat sauce for zoodles. I am NOT adding sugar to the recipe but rather grated carrots and giving them an opportunity to cook down all day. I get extra fiber, mineral, and vitamins without the calories or the insulin spikes.

Good luck to you!

when I was in the losing phase the most I would have is a few berries on top of my yogurt. Now that I'm in maintenance, I routinely have 1-2 fruit servings a day (berries, half a banana, a peach, an apple, etc).

I should add that I'm not particularly carb-sensitive, though. I'm cognizant of the fact that a lot of people *are*.

I had an apple about 4-1/2 years ago.

Sugar is sugar. There really isn't anything in fruit you can't get from another source, without all the sugar tagging along.

It's a lot more recent than the last veggie I've had.
