I believe you would be in even more pain than you were. You would also have fever, nausea, and would just all around feel bad enough to not second guess going into the ER. (From stories I have seen and what my doc said to watch for.)

From a surgeons website:

Symptoms of stomach leak include: rapid heart rate, dizziness, shortness of breath, fever, worsening abdominal pain, left chest or shoulder pain, abdominal distention, the appearance of illness and a general feeling that something is very wrong. Unfortunately, many of the symptoms may be absent or could be from something else (e.g. bleeding). Diagnosing a leak is further complicated by the fact that there is no single, reliable test to definitely diagnose a leak.

The diagnosis of a leak must be clinical, that is, the surgeon must consider all symptoms in relation to the timing after surgery. The diagnosis can never be 100% sure before treatment. If a leak is suspected the patient must go back to the operating room for an OPEN SURGERY to close the hole and clean up the leak. Usually, the patient will need to spend some time in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and rarely may require mechanical ventilation, temporary dialysis, and/or medications to support the blood pressure. Clearly, the key factor with a bowel leak is an early return to the operating room, even if the diagnosis is not assured.

Well....that sort of made me feel crummy....I have horrible (significantly worse) ab pain, shortenss of breath (b/c it hurts to breathe in now), and dizziness. Guess I'll wait a few hours b/c I'm almost positive a fever will crop up if that's what it is. I wouldn't think at 3 1/2 I could still get a leak, but of course, I really have no idea.

My guess is it isn't a leak - but if things get worse or don't improve definitely call your surgeon back!

Good luck!

The pain would be very significant, as you could imagine what stomach acid would do to the organs it drips down on.

However, shortness of breath can be a serious indicator of a variety of other issues; if you still are having breathing troubles, you should head to an ER to make sure.

Good luck.

Thanks....I've called the dr back and started the pain meds again. I had a severe indentation (like 1 inch) from the suture. My husband came right home and said it was totally gone....this is definitely what it was! It hurts like a mofo!!!! The breathing issue is definitely from the pain....you know how much it hurts to breathe deep when you hurt in your abs. Holy cow....I was not expecting this!!!! I even worked out again today, then boom!!! What the heck??!!!! I was all prepared to feel better each day!!!!

Guess you popped your suture.  While that does suck, at least you know you don't have a leak.  I know this is a setback, but in a few months when you're 100 pounds lighter, it won't feel so bad... I hope!

Good luck.
