Family encouraging me not to lose anymore

My husband and parents don't want me to lose anymore weight.  This is hard for me because I still need to lose 22 lbs or so to get to my goal of 160.  My goal is actually on the high side, in my opinion, so I'm not sure why they want me to stay where I am at.  Even at 160, according to the CDC, I am still in the "overweight" category for my height.  I just want to be in the healthy weight category for my height.  I don't want to be a size 2 or anything!  Not sure why my family can't get behind my decision.

Explain to them that with rapid weight loss you usually get a gaunt look for a while before your body adjusts.  That will go away and you will look healthier.  The weight loss usually levels out for a long while and then the body has a bounce-back regain. It is not unusual to gain about 20 pounds around the third year after surgery.

If you can get to goal and then lose some more for a bounce-back cushion you have a good chance of maintaining your goal weight long term.

Do your best to ignore. Lost as much as you can, because bounce back will happen.

I'm running into the same thing.  I'm 24 lbs from the healthy range, and I'd like a little "buffer".  From the waist up, I'm already small.  Hips and legs hold much of my remaining weight.  Unfortunately, we can't control where it comes off.  After some time in maintenance, it will redistribute and round out some of the bony spots.  I am also sharing the BMI charts with my family.

Age: 64; 5' 5"; High weight: 345; Start weight: 271 (01/05/15); Surgery weight: 218 (05/27/15); Pre-Op (-53); M 1 (-18); M 2 (-1.5); M 3 (-13.5 ); M 4 (-13); M 5 (- 8); M 6 (-12) M 7 (-5, Xmas); M 8 (- 9) Under surgeon's goal and REACHED HEALTHY BMI 12/07/15!! (Six months and one week.) AT GOAL month 8. Maintaining at goal range (139- 144) ~ four (4) years !!

Probably 99% of us get this from people while we are still quite a bit overweight, or even still obese. If you listen to them, you will regret it, badly, down the line.

Keep doing what you are doing.

Just keep plugging away at your weight loss, they're most likely use to the "bigger" person you use to be and most likely comfortable with you at that weight. They will get over it and get on board with the "new" you. So for now, I would just listen and ignore and keep losing until you've met your personal goal. No love lost.

I got the same push back from my sister and my best friend! I got comments that you can see my collar bones and hip bones! Whatever, I still carry a ton of weight in my lower half and I want to get as healthy as I can be. I feel like 160 will put me there. BTW, 160 will still put me as over weight! You do you and keep losing. We can't worry about what others think!!

I recently hit a normal BMI and just saw my surgeon last week. I was half expecting them to tell be to stop losing weight even though my personal goal is 135 lbs (BMI 23). I was surprised that my surgeon told me he wanted me to get down to 128-130 (BMI 22) because of the bounce back weight so many others here have already talked about. 13 -15 more lbs. to go for me. I'm already in a size 4, so I guess a 2 will be a reality for me!

I think a lot of people on this forum had a similar experience.  I did.  Friends and relatives told me to stop losing weight when I was still in the obese range.  Part of it is the loose skin made me look thinner than I was.  I had one cousin who told me I was too thin, and it turns out she and I are the same height and the same weight.  I told her she couldn't tell me I was too thin anymore! hehehe

I wanted to get to a normal BMI - just the high end of normal - not even a middle value.  I did and I'm happy I did it.

So I'd thank them for their opinion and ignore it!  hehehe

I'm pretty sure my immediate family would love to say something like this to me -- but they can't.  They are all morbidly obese.  Both of my parents had the RNY and neither got to goal or stayed even close.  I'm seeing first hand how *not* to do it.  My mom commented on me being anorexic when I was around 175 lbs.  Now at 138 I'm sure she thinks I look sickly.  I don't.  I actually look and feel fit.  Don't fall for this crap.  I'll tell you I'm using the surgery for all I can these first couple of years - because I know bounceback is real.  I want to get far enough under my goal while the surgery is doing all of the work!
