I can't keep the meal replacement down

Please  any help will be appreciated.  I'm on the low calorie pre op diet but I can't get the meal replacements down. When I did get it down it came straight back up.  It's the texture, smell, everything really. So I'm just drinking a 50 calorie soup instead and am taking multivitamins.  I'm still allowed 120gms of protein and 2 cups of selected veges once a day.  I'm not too hungry but I will struggle to keep this up for the two and a half weeks I've got to go. I need to stop crying. Arrgghhh

Hi,

I'm so sorry you are having trouble with the liquid diet.  Try calling your doctor's office and see if they can suggest an alternative.  You need to have a plan in place for post-surgery to make sure you can get your protein in.  Protein is necessary for healing.

post surgery, I could not tolerate any sweet drinks, not even my chewable vitamins.  I had to rely on chicken broth mixed with protein powder. I mixed protein powder into everything.  Broth, soups, yogurt, sugar-free jello, sugar-free, fat-free pudding ... anything I could stir!  But I did get the protein in without the drinks.  And I crushed the vitamins and mixed them into plain greek yogurt.

I think the pre-surgery liquid diet it the hardest part because you don't have the physiological changes from the wls to help you yet.  Plus, overcoming the carb-induced cravings is tough, even on a regular diet.  Hang in there.  It will get better soon.  And it is so worth it.  You'll be so much healthier soon.

Cheers for that. I've spoken to the dietician and as long as I keep it under 150 calories and only have protein for the other two meals I'll be sweet.  I'm so nervous about surgery but just determined to get through it.

Try a different brand. Or a different type there is whey based, soy based, plant based etc...

I mainly use unflavored isopure zero carb protein.mix with cold water to form a paste and then add to broths, soups, coffee.

As well as the other suggestions - try drinking from a sippy cup type of cup.  It can be beneficial to block the smells while you're drinking.

Seconding this! I got a bottle with a straw, and that helped a TON because the smell threw me off.

In addition to everyone's suggestions: I also spent extra and got higher quality protein.  I was getting nauseous too, and it was driving me nuts.  The more expensive brands that are reliable tend to be way more palatable.  Syntrax Nectar helped so much.  I made their tea version with iced tea and a squirt of flavored Mio.  It was WAY easier to drink.

Can you have cottage cheese?  You can also mix it into that.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

I too have struggled with the protein drinks. It's a long shot but of you like coffee GNC has a chocolate mocha that I really like. Also I have been drinking a cup of Fat Free Fairlife milk with a drop of sugar free chocolate syrup in it. The Fairlife milk is 80 calories and has 13 grams of protein. I buy this at Walmart and krogers in my area. Good luck.

Go to Costco or GNC both carry ON whey Its fantastic. GNC is more expensive but keep the receipt and they will take it back if you don't like it
