Your PARAthyroid has absolutely NOTHING to do with your THYROID, other than the fact that you have 4 tiny parathyroid glands located on every corner of the butterfly-wing-shaped thyroid glands (that's what PARA- means).

The thyroid gland secretes hormones which control metabolism.  The parathyroid gland secretes a hormone which regulates serum calcium levels.

Completely different in function; they're just located together.

Hypoparathyroidism is a completely different syndrome than hypothyroidism.

 To echo the previous posters, if you are prescribed medication for your thyroid, please take it! I stopped mine and my doctor freaked out. I gained weight (this was pre-op), was freezing all of the time and depressed. Since I have consistently taken my synthyroid, I've been doing better (although I am still cold, go figure ha ha).
