Given the co-morbs you have listed, I strongly urge you to rersearch the Duodenal Switch. It's better at curing diabetes than the RNY, and it will still allow you to take NSAIDs for your arthritis. And it's the number one WLS for those with high cholesterol, since it causes us to malabsorb 80% of the fat (i.e., cholesterol) we eat.

Edited to say that this post is directed to Petiteposies.

I put on weight, but I put the additional 10 lbs on deliberately and it didn't take very long. I came in right at 38 BMI and I was told that though I qualified, my insurance company might have denied me (even with co-morbidities) because they wanted to see me at least 100 lbs overweight. So I just qui****ching what I ate. I didn't gorge myself, but neither did I starve myself. I didn't eat a large quantity of sweets, or drink sodas or anything like that. I just ate foods my body seems to adore i.e. pasta, rice, potatoes and bread. Pluse I also ate until I was full. And I stopped eating my veggies... 4 weeks later when I had completed all of the paperwork I had gone from 205 to 215 and insurance approved me in two days. I had already undergone the 2 years of required documented efforts to lose weight, and the lowest I had ever seen in those years was a brief stint at 155 before I got pregnant with my second child. I haven't seen 155 since 2003! Don't worry, once you've had the surgery the weight gain you experience during your weight will become a fast fading memory as you wholley embrace your new life. Good luck!!!

My BMI was 70 and my surgeon wouldn't schedule the surgery until I got down to a BMI of 60.  I was able to lose some of the weight on my own, but I got stuck.  I went to my PCP and he helped me out.  I took diet pills (something I loathed doing) for a few months until I got my weight down.  Prior to my liquid diet, I had a "Goodbye to Food Tour."  We went on vacation and I denied myself nothing.  The night before I went on the liquid diet, I had exactly what I wanted including wine and lots and lots of carbs.  I was glad I did it that way because during the liquid diet, I reminded myself that I had enough food in those two weeks to tide me through the liquid diet stage.

After pre op and post op liquid diets, you'll be surprised how soft food that you once found bland tastes so amazing.  You can do this, newme.  You will get through this.  In awhile, you'll have the surgery and you'll just be amazed at how you are able to lose weight.  Then, you'll be griping about only losing X amount of pounds, like the rest of us.  You'll worry about stretching your pouch, as the pounds come off.  You'll stress over loose skin as you dream about plastic surgery and hitting your goal weight.  It'll be all right.

I am waiting for a surgery date right now. I have gone through all the hoops, jumps, leaps etc that my surgeon wanted me to do. He put me on a strict Liver Reduction Diet. Basically consists of lean protein any amounts, vegetables all except corn, potatoes, beans, and limited milk per day. I was to loose my 10% which was 30lbs. When I stuck to it the weight came off fast. I hit goal quickly. My problem was once I hit my goal and a little over 35lbs . I got stuck. Nothing was chaning in the positive direction. The weight started going back on.  He too is very strict and says again like other doctors you cannot gain any weight or back to starting block. I got approved very quickly for surgery because of my poor health etc... The delay I had was having to see all the specialists, and do all the tests in order  to get cleared for surgery. During that time my weight has gone all over the map. I have gotten back down where he wants me to be but, I am really wondering what kind of shape my liver truly is in?!!! I am trying to stick to the LRD and get the h20 in. It is very hard. I have read and talked to a lot of people about this rollercoaster weight waiting period just like you are talking about. They too still struggled before their surgery so, try not to be too hard on yourself. I think it is part of the process we all have. Most anyhow?! I am really nervous and have a lot of things flying in and out of my head about what things are going to be like after surgery, surgery itself etc.... Someone told me to calm down, breathe, deal with the task at hand one thing at a time and one day at a time. They also told me to get selfish and concentrate on me more. That seems to be helping with being able to stay on track. Oh, and I started journalling just jotting down my feelings, what I ate for the day, stressors etc.... I know everyone says do it etc... It does help to put it on paper. I look at it as storeing it away instead of the fat. I wish you much luck. Sorry if I was rambling. I just relate to you struggle and I wish you very well and much success.  Take care Dawn
