HELP! My pics all look weird!

I'm trying to upload my avatar/before shot.  Simple, right?  I am NOT computer illiterate, but I cannot figure out why the heck all my avatar shots are looking distorted.  Is it because of the 100 x 100 pixel thing or the 20K?  I actually just wanted to use the one picture I have as my avatar, but apparently it won't let me.  HELP!  Can someone walk me through this?!
