Hi Yall!  I have been thinking about this for quite a while, but since January have gotten more serious about it and done some researching.  I have been to two different seminars at two different facilities and am pretty sure I have decided on Dr. Morton at Metabolic Surgery Center at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.  I have my first consult with him and one of his girls to discuss which procedure and go over my insurance and my requirements.  Does anyone have any idea how long the first consult takes and if they set a surgery date right then.  If for some very lucky reason my insurance approves me right away, does everything move fast after that.  I have met most of my insurance criteria - except by PCP letter, which she will do with no problem.  How long do you think it will be before I actually have a date.  Why do some of the doctors make you go on a diet or a liquid diet prior to the surgery. I have a lot of the comorbitities, including sleep apnea.  I was reading that one girl had to have a sleep study prior.  I have already had one about a year ago and regular followups with the pulmonologist and am compliant with my CPAP.  Do you think I will still have to get the study done?

Yes you may have to go thorough the test again. A lot can change in a year. The goal of this diet is to provide liquids and part of the calories you need until you can eat solid food. Clear liquids are easily digested (broken down) and do not put a strain on your stomach or intestines.

During your initial office visit , the doctor will discuss all aspects of the surgery with you.  The discussion will focus on the risks, benefits and alternatives of surgery as what to expect after surgery.   The surgeon will also assist you in deciding which  weight loss surgery is best suited for you.  It is important that you thoroughly educate yourself about the different weight loss surgical options available before deciding which one is best for you.   The surgeon will take a complete medical history and perform a thorugh physical exam, and you will be weighed.  You will be sent for further tests which may incllude an abdominal ultrasound, blood and urine tests, nutritional counseling, psychological evaluation and appointments with other medical specialists.  Each surgeon has specific tests/studies that they require their individual patients to have performed prior to their surgery.    It is unclear whether your surgeon will honor your previous sleep study .  Since you have several comorbidities; each one needs to be addressed prior to your surgery.  A surgeon wants to be certain that he has reduced your risk of any unforeseen complications that may occur.  No surgeon was a deleterious outcome.  Remember the Hippocratic Oath...do no harm.  Once all the results are available, your surgeon will pre-authorize your surgery and begin the final steps before you are actually given a surgical date.  You will have to see him  to go over your test results, sign consent  forms and go over the final details of your surgery.

Best of luck to you.

Hi there, Dr. Morton was my band surgeon in 2003. He is an awesome Dr in every way...skill, patience, bedside manner and genuinely caring. I just spoke with him a abt 2 mos ago. His office used to run pretty well. My surgery was sched for 6/9 but my dear Father passed on 3rd and they postponed it but only a month...I was so blessed with Dr. Morton and I am forever grateful. U really are in good hands. I live in Ohio now and I need a closer surgeon...otherwise I'd b his pt in a heartbeat! Tia

What co-morbs do you have? And have you researched the duodenal switch? I know that your surgeon doesn't do it, but there are two excellent surgeons in Nashville who do.
