How much vitamin D3: 5,000 or 50,000?
My first month's labs are back and my Vitamin D levels are terrible. 34. My doctor told me to take 5,000IU D3 a day. I've had terrible back pain since my surgery in early May. I've read that that can happen with Vitamin D deficiency. This is why I want to make sure I am taking the right amount. I've seen others talk about taking 50,000IUD but I think that's 3x a week. VitaLady has them both, I just need to know what you all recommend. Thanks in advance.
ETA: I'm not sure if it matters, but I meant to post this in the RNY forum.
Well, according to the Linus Pauling Institute, people need a vitamin D level of at least 80. How much RNY folks need varies a lot from person to person. I did a sort of unofficial survey where I asked a whole bunch of RNY folks what their vitamin D level was and how much D3 they were taking, and I found three people that took 5000 IU a day and had a level of 80 or above. Everyone else with a level of at least 80 were taking at least 10,000 IU a day, and many took more than that. For instance, I just had labs done and my level was 96, and I take 50,000 IU D3 (from vitalady) three times a week.
If my level was 34, I would take more than 5000 IU a day.

I would take the 50,000 DRY D3 at least for now...once you get retested, THEN adjust it. I personally had to take 100,000 for three months every day to get mine out of the toilet and then adjust to 50,000 5 days a week and 100,000 2 days a week. Being retested again in a few weeks. If I take 50,000 every day, mine goes back to below 50. So I have to add an extra at least 2 days a week.
Mine bottoms out very quickly. But also, WITH extra, goes up just as fast so mine is a real balancing act.

Thank you for confirming what I wanted to do. I will do 50,000 IU three times a week and may adjust at my 3 month follow up. And yes, I knew to get the dry. Although that was from reading posts on OH as my doctor did not mention that part. Just as they never mentioned Calcium Citrate over Calcium Carbonate. The highest I saw available at Walgrees/CVS as a dry vitamin was 2,000 IU which is why I went online to look for the higher doses.
I've been lurking since October when I attended the seminar from my surgeon's office and the information here has been invaluable. I'm glad to have this board as an additional resource.
