I have learned during the pre-op meetings with my surgeons office that you cannot drink liquids with meals after rny.  For those of you who are more than 1 yr post op, is this forever, really?  Can you never again enjoy a glass of wine with dinner (as small as that dinner may now be)? Not that this will change my mind of course, but I just want to make sure I am totally prepared for what's to come, as little a sacrifice as this might be.  Also I do understand that I will be a cheap date post op as far as alcohol is concerned, which is not a big deal to me.

You can't ever drink with a meal. The liquid will wash the food out of your pouch.

You get used to not drinking with meals.

Some very successful RNYers drink with meals, others preach the "Never ever!" doctrine. I went with the DS, so I still have a fully-functional stomach and I've always drank with my meals.

I drink my wine up to the point that my food is ready and then I fini**** off once everyone else has finished their meal - I never eat dessert so I have some time between finishing my food and the end of the meal.   If you are not chugging gallons of it, I don't see it as a problem!

I drink my wine when I eat very dense proteins meal. That helps me digest the meat and I can eat 4 oz of steak and not 2 oz and be full for 3-4 hrs.

When I had small pouch days and can't eat enough and don't want to drink protein shakes - I may chose to drink with my main meal.  But that is on maintenance - when I know I can afford the extra calories and I make sure I count for that.

Of course you can drink with meals if you want to.  If you drink with meals, it will wash the food out of your pouch quickly, allowing you to eat more and causing you to get hungry again soon.  If you don't mind eating more and getting hungry fast, you can drink with meals.

You can eat anything you want, drink anything you want but if you want to be successful you will make better choices than doing anything and everything you want for the rest of your life.  It is not that you can't drink with a meal it is that you should not.  If you drink with your meal, it fills your stomach up faster and it also tends to wash through very quickly what you just ate so you feel hungry faster and eat more and then gain weight.  If you are going to make a choice to drink then you should do it before your meal and not during or after your meal.

Thanks for the insight - it helps to hear real life situations as opposed to just hearing the rules from the doctors.  I know what I need to do, and I plan to do whatever it takes to make myself a success story.  Just helps to understand all the habits I will need to modify.  Thanks.

I have found that if I drink a glass of wine, I lose my control over my eating. Just to be aware. Also you will get drunk faster.  Some have had trouble with transfer addictions as in alcoholism after WLS.   Just be aware and be careful.
