WLS books

As part of my research prior to surgery, I picked up a number of books about WLS.  So far I've read too - The Sleeved Life by Pennie Nicola and Stranger Here by Jen Larsen.

The Sleeved Life seemed more like a manual or a how-to, so it was fine to read but didn't give me lots of new information.  Stranger Here was a memoir and super fascinating.  It definitely reaffirms the knowledge that this is stomach surgery we pursue, not head surgery.  For me it also reaffirmed my choice of a restriction-only surgery.

Have you read either of these books?  What did you think of them?  Have you read other books on WLS that you'd recommend?

Hi.  When I first started researching WLS I purchased "The Big Book of Gastric Bypass."  I know however you are getting the sleeve, I think they have one for the sleeve but personally I learned more form reading posts on this forum as well as others.  One book that I really liked was Al Roker"s "Never Going Back."  He had gastric bypass but it was not necessarily about the type of surgery it was about the commitment and the struggle to change your lifestyle.  For me it was like hearing parts of my past.  I totally recommend reading it.  One other book that I read was the "Psychological Journey of Gastric Bypass."  This was a quick read and was not as informative as Al Roker's for me.  Hope this helps.

Thanks!  Roker's book sounds great and I'll definitely pick it up.  I think memoirs are fascinating in general!

I sort of hope that Graham Elliot write a memoir about his WLS journey, it would be really interesting to read the story of someone whose life so completely revolves around food.

I read 'Eat it Up'. It is a general what to do book for any weight loss surgery.

Thanks!  I'll look into it.

From the reviews on Amazon, it looks like this book is geared toward Christians, is that correct?

No, it didn't have any Christianity in that I can remember. I do believe the author specializes in addictions as she was an addict~~maybe alcohol. She has a practice for people with food addictions so there may be some 12-step-program influence. There may have been some reference to a higher power.

I loved Jen's book, and I also found Weight loss Surgery for Dummies to be helpful. It's an easy read but explains the "why" behind all of the seemingly random instructions and rules :)

I second the Dummies book. I sent a copy to my mom, who stayed with me while I recovered and generally worried about the whole process, and she thought it was a really easy-to-understand overview of the process-- especially as someone who hadn't been through all the medical appointments and such.
