Anyone taking Metformin?

Unfortunately, while metformin is quite effective for the conditions you are using it for, it can cause significant GI distress. When I practiced as a pharmacist, I would recommend to my patients that they always take it with food, and to my physician colleagues a slow titration(start with a low dose and increase every 4 weeks) to give the patient the best chance of tolerating the desired dose. It is not an easy drug to tolerate. I also used it several years ago for insulin resistance, and it was quite rough. There are alternatives to metformin for insulin resistance, but I don't know if they will also work for PCOS or acne.
Last I heard it was on t.v. saying if you got Cancer from it you can call a phone number to contact a lawyer...I took it years ago for awhile .I am diabetic but control it with exercise and watch my sugars now..

I took it for several years. I just got off of it because my last blood work showed so much improvement I didn't need it anymore. I think I initially had some queasiness with it but I got used to it pretty quickly. I think I started it 3 times a day and always had a problem getting the mid-day dose in, so my doctor increased the dose and made it twice a day. I didn't have any problems after the first couple weeks. I have my recent surgery to thank for being off of it now!
I'm not a health care professional, but I took Metformin for years and it didn't work. I took it for high blood sugar (diabetes type 2). When I started on insulin after 10 years of taking Metformin with no significant change in my blood glucose, it was such a huge difference it was scary. I started around 2000 taking about 100mg (made me so sick for about 3 days until my body got used to it), and ended in April 2010 taking 1000mg. Every time my dosage was increased I would be sick for 3 days.
The lowest my fasting blood sugar ever got was 150, after strenuous exercise and diet (I got down to 215 in 2004 after going to the gym every day for 2 hours EVERY DAY! and dieting - low carbs hardly any sugar). After gaining back that weight and more, I topped out at 257 (with fasting blood glucose without insulin at 349) in February 2012 when I had RNY. I haven't needed any insulin or other diabetes meds since the day before my surgery.
I've heard so much negative press about metformin. I've never heard it being used 'off-label' (I think that's what it's called when a medication is prescribed for something other than its original intention, in this case, diabetes) for PCOS or acne.
I wish you the best!
