I am having my VGS in a few weeks but I have a silly question. After surgery do recommend getting a few cups with straws to sip out of all day long? I read some where that straws are not reccommended and if they are not why? Thanks in advance for your answers. Also any tips presurger and post surger would be greatly appreciated.

My surgeon had a no straw rule due to air being taken in along with the liquid which would definitely have caused pain and bloating.  I can use a straw now, but I'm 7 years out.  I think the no-straw rule was in effect for the first 6 months.

I bought small cups, forks and spoons. Then I bought a cookbook called eating after weight loss surgery. Which in this book after a recipe it will tell you how much you can have after having the band, bypass or sleeve and how much for different weeks. I like it but haven't tried it yet. I thought It will help me loose weight before the surgery.

My centre told us "absolutely no straws post-op" because it introduces air into the stomach. That can get really uncomfortable.

I'm almost four months post-op, and I've only tried drinking with a straw two or three times. It's uncomfortable for me, absolutely! However, I have a long commute to work and it's easier to drink from a water bottle with a straw while driving, rather than tip a bottle up to my mouth! So I'm trying to make it work, little by little.

I know some people are able to use straws post-op... and it's apparently easier the further along you are. I'm hoping it gets better for me.

Every centre is different. Check with yours to see what they recommend.

My program said straws are fine, but if you feel they bother you, stop.

Drinking is important. However you can get fluid in, do it.
