Talk to your surgeon.  The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery says it's fine to swallow pills as soon as you tolerate them after surgery.  I was swallowing pills about 12 hours after my RNY with no trouble.  After all, they are not operating on your throat or esophagus so surgery shouldn't cause trouble swallowing.  Some people prefer to use chewable or liquid meds for a while after surgery or to crush pills (never crush meds without checking with your pharmacist first, though, because some should not be crushed).  But others are fine swallowing pills from day one.

My surgeon told me it was ok to take my meds the normal way right after surgery. I started the first day I came home and have never had a problem.
