Loss of voice after surgery

Hi, today is my 2 week post op date after being sleeved. I woke up from surgery with barely a whisper of a voice. It slowly started improving (barely, but I could notice) but in the last few days I'm back to almost a whisper again. People on the phone can't hear me or in a drive-thru window (bank or for kids) let alone my husband or kids when I'm in the same room. Has anyone else experienced this? From what I've read on other websites it could take up to a year to get it back. I'm sure the naysayers will have fun asking me if it was worth it to have the surgery and lose my voice. I'm due to go back to work next week and my employer is concerned whether or not I should go back without a voice.

Wow, that sounds rotten!  Have you talked to your surgeon?

Yes, she's aware. Before I was discharged she suggested lozenges. I've talked to the nurse a couple of times since and she keeps saying it 'should' come back, keep drinking hot tea. Not much help. I see the surgeon on Monday but I'm sure she'll just refer me to an ENT. I was hoping it was something that others have experienced and suddenly one day they woke up with a bright, booming voice say, after 2 weeks or so   I don't even know how I would be able to find out if it were damaged during surgery.

My next idea was going to be seeing an ENT!  They should be able to tell if something was damaged.. maybe your vocal folds during intubation?

Aaah, I'm so sorry.  I'm a singer and I just can't imagine how horrible that would be!  Good luck.

I would agree that seeing an ENT would be a good first step.  I was slightly hoarse right after surgery and attributed it being intubated during surgery, and my voice was just fine about a day or two after that.  Sounds like you need your voice to work, so I would get this evaluated as soon as possible.

I had a hoarse/raspy sounding voice for close to a month after my August surgery. You've gotten some great advice in the thread so far, I just wanted you to know you're not alone!
