So I'm about 5 months post op rny and I wanted to know how soon everyone had a drink after surgery. I wanted to have a class of wine on new years. Would I be crazy if I had some wine on new years

The best rule of thumb is, it's ok to drink alcohol as soon as you're ready to regain weight.

This is the best answer that I've seen to this question.

I don't drink anything alcoholic or carbonated. It is empty calories? If I am going to splurge, I will tasts a dessert. Just a small taste and at the end of dinner when there is very little room for anything else.

I won't do anything to jeopardize my progress.

The recommendation is to wait about a year, basically, when your loss starts slowing down.  The liver is under strain during the rapid weight loss you're experiencing right now.  Adding alcohol now would risk serious damage.  You would probably be okay enjoying the New Years toast, but you'll find that it hits hard and fast, so don't count on finishing the entire glass.

11 months out and haven't had a drink.

I don't see a need to add it for the holidays.  I will wear a slinky dress and be the designated driver instead!

Check with your dr just to be sure if it's ok at your stage to have a drink, with that said yeah I had a drink, not wine, hard core whiskey!, but I only had half a shot, in the smallest shot glass I had & had

just for taste lol, & I haven't had a drink since. If you must have a drink I'd baby that 1 drink all night & not fini**** just sip or pretend to sip.

I had half a glass of champagne on New Year's Eve last year to toast in 2014 and to celebrate hitting goal weight.   That half glass made me absolutely loopy and I was very glad I hadn't tried it in public.

Since then the only booze I've tried is a mimosa and that was just at Thanksgiving.  I couldn't fini****  I wasn't a drinker before but post-op I've pretty much given it up willingly.  Not worth it...
