(Re) discovering new foods

Hi all -

I got an all clear last week from my NUT to move to the lifetime phase. I was away for the weekend, and had to remind myself that I actually could try foods other than the protein shakes, meat, fish and yogurt which has been the staple of my diet for the last few months.

A week later I'm starting to branch out and try different foods. Some interesting discoveries

  • Coffee tastes like metal, which is a bummer because I LOVED my morning cup pre surgery
  • Sashimi feels like a slider food...I can eat 5 oz in one sitting! My poor, neglected taste buds love the "new" tastes of ginger, soy and wasabi.
  • Berries (blue, black so far) are delicious and I can eat quite a few - maybe 3/4 cup? (Good...because I need the fiber!)

Anyway, thought I'd share some examples. I'm still nervous trying new foods... I never know what my sleeve will reject.

What foods did you discover worked well for you as you moved to lifetime phase?

Lisa

I'm just a bit ahead of you, just passed 3 months.  I'm trying to stick to the basics!

My day is usually looking like this:

crustless quiche OR protein shake for breakfast.

String cheese or greek yogurt for snack

Chicken for lunch (or sandwichmeet rolled with some cheese) ocassionally go out for 1 shrimp taco at local taqueria with lettuce instead of tortilla

Dinner...chicken, beef, shrimp, pork...with salad or veggie or by itself.

snack - sugar free popsicle, raspberries with a bit of cream, frozen blueberries with truvia.

My biggest extravagances are really just making the things I'm eating taste good - trying new recipes for the meat I eat (spicy pork, lemon garlic chicken etc)

Enjoy this next phase, try new things, good luck!

I can eat quite a bit more fish than I can chicken or beef! Works just fine, since it seems to be lower in calories as long as I don't go wild with the sauce.

I've grown a new appreciation for various types of hot sauce, since spicy doesn't bother my sleeve at all. Super helpful when I was eating nothing but chicken all the darn time! Dice some chicken, add a pinch of shredded cheese, some hot sauce or salsa, nuke until melty. Amazing! Works well with eggs and tunafish as well.

I could never stand yogurt until I tried it again post-op. Now I have a container of Greek yogurt with SF jam pretty much every day.

I eat a LOT of jerky! I make it myself, so it's ridiculously cheap, and I can make it as spicy as I like. My husband and I could easily go through an entire London broil worth each week. 2lb meat, a jar or two of assorted hot sauce(s), half a container of Montreal steak seasoning. Let it marinate overnight, 10h in the dehydrator, and it's MAGICAL.

My sleeve is the same, loves Fish/seafood. When we go out to dinner with friends I always order fish or seafood as I can eat more and get fewer questions or comments on how little I eat.

I have yet to buy a dehydrator , though is on my list of 'wants", I love jerky and am so anxious to try fresh jerky!

Keep an eye out at Goodwill-- that's where I got my first one. I think I paid five bucks for it :)
