I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2000.

I haven't had to take any diabetes medication or insulin since surgery, and my A1C is now in the "not-diabetic" range.

My A1C stayed low for years then went up and I went on insulin again in year 8

I had Type 2 for about 20 years, maybe more. Before RNY, I was on Victoza, Jardiance, and Toujeo. Fastings were never lower than 130. I ate like a pig, out of control. Five months out my fastings are in the 80s-90s now. I'm following my surgeons plan. A1C scheduled for six month visit. I don't know what will be in five years. As long as I watch what I consume, I'm hoping to keep the dreaded diabetes away. I'm not yet at my goal weight. I know there is a family history of diabetes and heart disease, but family was overweight.

Years ago, pre RNY, I tried metformin. Made me so ill I could not work. Hope for the best for you.

My pre-surgery A1C was 5.9. After surgery it was 5.1. At year one it was back to 5.9. I am 100 pounds thinner, but I eat too much sugar in the evenings. Even if I only eat 200 calories in candy (not chocolate), it is a high percentage of the amount of food I am eating. I am currently working on increasing my protein and lowering my "junk food". I started a job 90 days ago that is very physical, I lost 7 pounds. A young guy that started along with me lost 10 pounds. So, rather than decreasing my sugar, I have been eating pretzels to stop the weight loss. Bad, bad, me. It is always a journey. The surgery will not cure diabetes, just put it in remission. I have never taken any meds. I was instructed to take a week long class and given the RNY surgery as an alternative to diabetic medicine. I thought the weight loss would solve my problems, but I am going to have to modify my diet.

Thanks..I'm 14 years postop and have lost 135 pounds, still diabetic and still have hypertension controlled on meds.

I am just shocked that after losing so much weight I am still having issues!

Best of luck

Robin

PS...I did the pretzel thing too and stopped.

The only procedure that medical professionals have even dared used the word "cure" for type 2 diabetes is the DS, and even then, it holds 98% of successful results, long term, so it's still not a total cure.

RNY often gets great results of remission for a year or two, starting within days of getting surgery. VSG shows signs of significant improvement as the patient loses weight (some have noticed nearly immediate results too). Many who had severe cases at least experienced some improvement with either procedure. With both of these, diabetes may start to return as regain occurs or over time.
