I am a lap-band patient since 10/2006, I lost 80# and gained it back. I need to lose at least 100# for a hip replacement surgery. I saw the surgeon and he suggests VSG, I don't know. Please give me some input on this. Thanks

Revision on 02/04/15

You have to ask yourself why you gained the weight back. Was it because of band issues or did you fall back into old habits? Numerous folks have revised from the band to either the bypass or VSG.

Just know that some not all that have revised from the band to the VSG ended up down the road having to revise to the bypass due to severe GERD/reflux. Trust me you don't want to deal with acid so make sure you research every WLS out there available for the revision.

Since you did not have long term success with the band, you will need a stronger tool. You might cut a tree branch with a nail file if you worked at it long enough, but it will be much more likely to be successful with a chain saw.

The DS is the biggest tool, after that the RNY, and then the VSG. All of them can be used successfully. Just research carefully. It is the old carpenter's rule of measure twice, cut once.

If I needed to lose 100 pounds to be able to have hip replacement surgery to improve my quality of life, I would have weight loss surgery ASAP. I hope your only question is "Which surgery should I have?" Did your surgeon talk to you about other options- RNY or DS? Research your options and make your decision.

Good luck.
