Did you have to announce your weight in front of your classmates in your education classes?

Thank you all so much for the validation, it really helped me. I am trying hard to be compliant with everything I am told to do, but this just doesn't seem right to me. I am scared to speak up for fear of not getting the surgery for noncompliance, so I feel like I am being coerced into doing this. I guess I will just have to see how it goes. Thanks again!

I don't believe they can deny you surgery for refusing to do it. It is fat shaming.

Personally, I would respectfully refuse to do it. It wouldn't be non-compliant because you are taking the class, but this one thing I would adamantly refuse to do. I would tell them it feels like the weight shaming you went through as a kid and you won't do it now. It's possible nobody has ever spoken up about it and they're too dim to realize what they're asking SMO people to do. They also probably think because everyone is obese it doesn't matter...but it most assuredly does. Weight is a very personal thing, and it should not be required to announce it to the room. I love the slip of paper thing that someone else mentioned. Maybe suggest that instead?

I absolutely agree.

I would absolutely refuse. I would refuse to NOW too, even at a "normal" weight.

You are missing nothing, and this is a despicable and cruel practice.

There is absolutely no reason for this, and even if they should give one, it isn't invalid. The only thing this accomplishes is showing that whoever is running this "education" class is absolutely tone-deaf to the experiences and emotional pain of being obese.

I would absolutely refuse to be weighed in this manner.

I agree it reminds me of grade school, junior high, and high school physical education classes. I hated it and if I found out before hand I wouldn't go to school the next day....

At the support classes I go to now and went to pre-op we introduced yourself and what surgery we had or or having... That was it. If we wanted to say how much we lost or our weight, we could but it was optional. As a matter of fact when they say it's time for introductions they say " Please give your first name, what surgery you had, and how far out you are!" that's it.

Can you call before hand and see why they are making everyone do that? Explain to them that it feels like weight shaming.

I absolutely would not have liked that....but if I HAD to give a weight number...I would probably have said...my goal weight is 150... and let the leaders know that that was my definite focus...(my first thought was thAt I would give them my legal weight..you know...the one on my drivers license)

I?m a wise ass, so if they tried to force me, I?d give my weight in some arcane unit of measurement. I wonder about the purpose of this. If it?s motivation, why not ask people to (voluntarily) share how much they?ve lost.
