What I have been wanting and waiting for for so long is finally going to happen.  I'm going to have weight loss surgery.  The insurance I had under husband's employer totally excluded WLS.  However, 2 years ago the employer's insurance office told me that Medicare would cover surgery if there were comorbids involved.  They even went so far as to suggest that I go on Medicare Disability so I could have the surgery...ahhhhh no thank you!

I hit the magic 65 last month and went on Medicare.  When I selected my Medicare supplement plan I totally took into consideration the high possibility of having WLS so I enrolled in Plan F which has no deductibles, etc.  I saw my internist last week for a follow up to check my blood work because I had to go back on BP med.  While I was there I got a referral to a Bariatric Center with a leading surgeon.  It's required that everyone 1st attend an orientation session to see if this is really what the patient really wants to do and for the entire process to be thoroughly explained.  At the session we had the oportunity to meet with the insurance specialist, and a couple of other department reps.

So I sat down with the insurance rep and found out that because I have Medicare and comorbidities I don't have to go through an approval process.  I am automatically approved and I only have to "diet" for 3 months, instead of 6 months that is now required by most insurance companies.  The psychologist had a cancellation so I get to see him next Tuesday (7/28), I can start my required Supervised Weight Loss class the following week (8/4), and I have my consultation with the surgeon on 8/25.  If all goes according to schedule I should be having surgery the end of October or 1st part of November.   I also found out that my Medicare Plan F supplement pays for my deductible and whatever Medicare doesn't pay for.  I'm excited to finally be able to get off this weight.  Once I have the WLS I will regroup with my ortho doc about my needed knee replacement.  We decided to hold off on the knee until after the WLS.

I met with the psychologist this week...passed with flying colors.  His diagnosis for me is Biological Obesity.  Has anyone here also been given this diagnosis?  What does it mean?  I found an article that states a biologically obese person will only have successful weight loss with surgery and medication. Does anyone care to weigh in on this (no pun intended)?
