Did you have to lose weight before surgery? If so how much? How did you do it? I am seeing my DR. on the 13th and just trying to figure out what to expect.

My surgery was open, so it wasn't necessary to shrink the liver to maneuver any lap tools around it.

Yes about 15-18 lbs by surgery date that doesn't include the 5 day liquid prior to surgery, I started by taking protein shake and walking 3 times per week. It was not easy but worth. I'm schedule for surgery with Dr.Bonanni on 12/12/12... I'm very excited and want to get the show on the road...

I orginally was going RnY and yes they wanted me to lose weight prior to surgery. When I switched to open DS my doctor said no worries. I did lose 30 lbs prior though.

My nutritionist said I had to be able to follow a plan, not that I had to lose anything.

I did, however, have to do liquid & protein only for 2 weeks prior and I lost about 20 lbs during that time.

My doctor wanted me to lose 10 pounds beginning 2 weeks prior to surgery, I lost 11.

No extended pre-op diet at all. With my doc it depends on the starting BMI of the patient, I think. Your doc trained with my doc maybe he still does something similar. : )

Typically my surgeon puts those over a 50 BMI on a month long "liquid" diet (not completely liquids just lots of it and no real carbs). Under 50 BMI gets a 2 week.

HOWEVER, I was so close to the cutoff, he told me to NOT lose weight at all...and the only "diet" I did was the nothing by mouth after midnight the day of surgery. I was a HUGE (being snarky to myself here) 35.2 pre-op...all it was gonna take was losing a couple of lbs to slip below the cutoff.

My surgeon asked me to try to lose weight before surgery, but he wasn't real strict about it.  I did a high protein/low carb for a month and lost 11 pounds.  Also, I know of a general surgeon who asks his patients to try to lose weight to shrink the liver for abdominal surgeries totally unrelated to weight loss.  It really depends on the surgeon's ideas about liver shrinking.
