Body Toning for Beginner?

I have lost about 50 pounds since starting my journey in October.  I am walking a minimum of 1.5 miles most morning and am adding afternoon bike riding to that this week.  Needless to say, I think my legs getting a pretty good workout.

I am looking for something I can do at home for the rest of my body.  I add muscle very quickly for a girl and would like to start working on toning up as I lose the rest of my weight.

Any suggestions would be welcomed!  I do have lower back issues as well as periodic knee issues but those are lessening with each pound lost.

Thanks!

What worked really well for my wife is doing Zumba.  She does videos off of Youtube (Club Fitz is her favorite), and it has really worked well.  As you get more advanced, you could add hand weights and ankle weights.

Great idea!  I took a couple Zumba classes years ago and loved it.  Why didn't I think of that?  Thanks for the tip.  I will definitely check out Club Fitz!!

Pilates.  Find a Stott Pilates class in your area and take it - it's amazing for your core and body and you can do it at home easily enough once you get the basics down.  (There's a great iPhone app called "Learn Pilates" that is Stott-style, but it's good to start with an instructor.)

I will look into that.  I've been interested in Yoga and Pilates but am not sure I'm ready for it yet.  Seems like everyone doing them are skinny people!    I'm not quite there yet!

I started doing yoga and pilates at 260, and I'm 5'4".  So you're definitely there!  Remember - everyone else in class is more concerned about their own body and their own form than they will be about yours.  I've never felt unwelcome in a class.  I've felt awkward and ungainly, but that's of my own doing, not because of anyone else.

It's funny, this morning I definitely had an "ugh I look gross and don't want to go to the gym" moment.  Even I have to remind myself that no one else there cares what I'm doing or what I look like.  And it's true. No one did anything other than smile and nod when I came in.  They definitely didn't know that I was having an "I hate my body" day.

Look for a beginner yoga class and at a smaller less commercial place.  Most will have "drop in" prices which are about $15 a class, so you can try the location out before deciding on any package.  Also stalk the place before a class, drive up to the location and watch the body shapes walking in.  You'll find there are a lot of people of different shapes and ages going in.

I went to several yoga classes and the instructors are so "zen" that they just calmly help anyone into a position that works for them.  If you don't feel comfortable with a position for any reason such as an injury, or just not sure they will either help or modify it.  What's nice is almost anything we did had a modifier for those who were newer or people with less flexibility or strength.  Also as someone said above people care about what's going on at their mat and while you generally do look around I never found myself looking at others other than those who were really good so I could try and do what they were doing.  So to be totally honest no one will be looking at you :-)

So do not be scared at all.  Call ahead and ask a few questions, you'll find most places have all the things you need even.  You can used their mats and props and you just need to bring a small towel and water.  It's relaxing, helps with being more flexible, and it's actually a work out.

After saying all that I want to get back into going.
