New 3 month follow up

At my 1 month post-surgery follow up they did not take a blood test. Just a weigh in. I am concerned that the new HRRH centres 3 month post-op check up with a blood test is too long.

If I have a problem with one of my levels, 3 months is too long to wait. A lot can happen in 3 months.

I am booking an appointment with my family physician for a blood test. I need to know.

I agree Jason. It's a good idea. I'm surprised they didn't send you off with blood work papers.

Yes, they started as of June 1st all new patients get their blood test at the 3 month mark unless there is some other medical reason for a blood test.

Hi Jason - I had me first blood test at 3 months and found my iron was low.

I was feeling tired so it was no big surprise.

I am now on supplements and have repeated my blood for my 6 month follow-up next Wednesday.

I think you can trust the system especially if you are feeling fine.

If you draw blood to often you run the risk of your iron being lower than normal.

Hope all is well.

Thanks Harold. I do feel tired somedays, and then others tons of energy. I am exercising a lot and want to make sure I am okay to do so.

Hi Jason,

No doubt you gotta do what you gotta do but this is always how St Joe's Hamilton has operated. I'm not so worried myself because it maybe it takes that long to level out your body, ensure you have adequate nutrition from your food itself., which you only just started... just a thought.
There are risks and costs to a program; but they are far less than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction. -JFK

That is way, way too long. If the clinic won't run it at 3 months, ask your family doc to run some basics at 3 months out like iron, B vitamins and vitamins A and D (which are covered for bariatric patients - your family doc may not be aware of this).
I had OHIP approved Duodenal Switch surgery with Dr. Dennis Hong at St. Joseph's Hamilton on March 7th, 2012. Want more information on the DS in Ontario? Send me a private message!

Hi there

I had my first blood work at three months and like someone else said, as long as you feel ok then don't worry about it.
If it makes you feel better though then see your family doc.

Take care
