Sick & Surgery On Horizon.

Afternoon Everyone,

Just need a place to vent.

My surgery is coming up at TWH on February 3rd with an Optifast start date of January 13th. I've been so incredibly excited and nervous.

Unfortunately, I caught something from some relatives over the Christmas holiday and have been sick since just after boxing day. It is kicking my butt.

It started off as the sniffles to a full blown sinus inflection to a bad chest infection. My family doctor knew I had the surgery coming up so she was treating the chest infection as if it were pneumonia even though she is sure it wasn't.  I'm on a nasal spray, antibiotic, and puffers.

Has anyone ever been very sick before their surgery with more than just the sniffles?

I talked to someone at TWH earlier and a nurse will be calling me with some advice/direction.

If I do have to postpone due to illness, is that usually by a few weeks or will I be waiting for a few months?

Extremely bummed that this is happening but I want to go into surgery as healthy as a horse which I'm sure you all can understand.

Let us know what the nurse advises.  I have my surgery for Jan 25th.  I've been sick for past couple of days (not near as bad as you).   I kind of thought it was a good thing because I can recover from it in plenty of time before surgery and less chance of me being sick right before.  Get it over with now.

I hope you feel better real soon, and this doesn't interfere with your surgery.

Just got off the phone with one of the nurses.

She wants me to go and get an x-ray done on my chest. If it's clear, to go ahead and start Optifast and to make sure I drink tons of water, she said that 3 times. If it's not clear, I'll have to rebook.

I had what you have before my surgery and it lasted about 2 1/2 weeks.  Finally the doctor gave me antibiotics and it cleared within a few days.  I remember going to my pre-op and being sick but by the time I went for surgery I was all better.

If you are taking antibiotics it should clear up soon.

Good luck!

I kinda had a chest cold when I went in for surgery.  They wound up giving me IV antibiotics and a breathing treatment about two hours pre-op.  When I was discharged, I didn't have the chest cold anymore.
