Closing the abdomen after a TT or LBL?
When you're paying for surgery out of pocket, it is easy to try to save a few $$, but I agree that staying inpatient for one night for some assistance would probably be a good idea.

I know what you mean, Liz. I consulted with one surgeon who did his procedures in a surgery center not the hospital. The cost was minimally cheaper, but I was really nervous about the "what ifs" and whether there was some certification problem that kept him from working in the hospital. I am also hoping that having a few more monitored hours will help the pain to get under better control.

All of the surgeons I looked at did surgery at a surgery center. I wouldn't make any assumptions about what that means. My surgeon uses a surgery center and has operated at the same one for over 15 years because he trusts his team there and doesn't want to change that. He also has privileges at many top hospitals, so I think it's a team/business decision and definitely not a certification problem.
The recovery center I'm going to after is across the street from a great hospital, but hopefully I won't need their services!
Good point! They certainly have more control of the staffing and procedures in their own facility. I was thinking of one surgeon in our area who has his own surgery center but I could find no information on his website, RealSelf or elsewhere online that he had privileges at any of the local hospitals that do plastics. That was a big red flag to me and I didn't bother calling for an appointment.
BTW, when is your surgery coming up? Soon isn't it? How long are you planning to be off work?

I believe in trusting red flags and gut feelings! Sometimes the sum of the parts tells you all you need to know.
My surgery is in 18 days. Eek! Luckily, I'm not working right now so I can just take my time recovering. Which is good, because it's hard to get a sense of how long I'll be out of commission.
board certifications are more important than facility. Mine was a private clinic, which was recommended by a nurse i know because it was a private clinic and the care was top notch. I had the clinic to myself for recovery and two nurses.
My doctor gave up his hospital privileges to focus on his own practice. he has his own OR. no need to work out of hospitals any more.

I am pretty sure mine was quilt stitched and I still ended up with just 1 drain for 1 week. Swelling is brutal and I still have a man crotch 4 weeks later, so grateful for the drain time I did have.

I talked to the surgeon again and he said that he plans to put in 1 drain for 10 days even with the quilting. He like to be sure to prevent seromas.

yeah. mine said it gets removed once it is producing less than 25cc's in 24 hours. for me, that was 1 week. for a friend it was 4. everyone is different.
