Has anyone on here gone to Mexico for surgery?  My Lap Band has not worked well for me and I am thinking of revisingto a sleeve.  Any thoughts appreciated.

I haven't heard anything bad about my doctor: Guillermo Alvarez
Endobariatric.com

Though I am seeking a revision from VSG, I would highly recommend Dr. Alvarez.

Thank you so much for the response.  Why are you needing/wanting a revision?

I have the lap band but the food constantly hangs - and if I let enough fluid out - I gain weight... I was hoping the sleeve was the answer.  But hearing you are thinking of a revision - I would appreciate knowing why.

Thanks for the info.  Karen

Hi Karen,

I think I am in the minority when it comes to revisions from VSG to another surgery.

There are lots of reasons, I guess. I eat to comfort myself, I feel hungry all the time and can eat way more than Id like to. I have never had anyone look at my sleeve since surgery, either. I have no idea what is going on internally.

But one thing about going out of the country that may have been a huge issue was the lack of ancillary services. Don't get me wrong, Dr. Alvarez is great. But there was no real follow up. No nutrition counseling or psych counseling. No group support. These were all things I had to do on my own as there was no program to go by. And with no insurance, I simply couldn't do it on my own.

My sister went through the program and had her RNY 18 months ago. She's doing great.

I think that the surgery was worth it. However, it is clear as day to me that I must have the full package of support services as well as continuing therapy. I also need a surgery that is both restrictive and has malabsorbtion.

I don't want to scare you away from VSG because it's pretty awesome. But for me and my situation, I must go another step further.

But I think it's very important to hear about failures as it is successes.

Good luck to you :)

Thanks for your candid information.  I feel the same way about my lap band.  I have seen it work for others - but for me.. it just doesn't work.  Good luck with your procedure - are you going back out of the country for that?  Or are you going to use someone in the states?  Good luck.
