I am 3 weeks out and now having a hard time with constipation. It has been about a week since I went. I also am supposed to take a med that I know will make it worse but I'm afraid to. I don't know what to do. I'm drinking as much as I can. What can I do to get things moving again. I went to the pharmacy and asked the pharmacist they said I need to drink more and add fiber. I am drinking as much as I can. I know it should be more. When can I add fiber and how?

Not sure when you can add it... as I am still pre-op.  However,  I have the same problem, as I have to take lots of iron for anemia that just plugs me up horribly.

I use mix in Benefiber 3xs a day into my crystal light.  You cant taste it at all, and there is no grit.  I also take a stool softener every evening before bed.  This helps immensely.

I would call your docs office and make sure you can take these,  if so they should help alot!

Good luck!  Hope things get moving soon!  I know how miserable it can be!!!

I totally understand how you feel...last week i went 9 days with nothing...and my surgeons office just told me not to worry about it that it would happen when it happened! I am a lil over a month out and can have fruit so i ate 2 prunes and had a lil bite of something we make at work for our consumers called prune whip....its prunes raisins and figs boiled in senakot tea and then pureed up...it works wonders. they used to make all the new hires taste it and let me tell u i licked the spoon and didnt even really take a bite and 10 mins was in the bathrm

Call your dr to see what he/she recommends.  Mine recommends ducosate stool softener daily & MOM if that doesn't work.  I've seen miralax mentioned a lot here too.

I was told by my WLS doc to take Fiber Choice (2- 3 times daily)  and Miralax every morning.  It has worked wonders.  I also take a lot of iron (anemic) and other meds that aide in the constipation.
Hope you find something that will work for you.

I use Benefiber (sugar free) in my protein shakes 2x a day and take one Colace a day. That seems to do the trick for me.

This same thing happened to me in my first 3 weeks. My surgeon told me not to worry. He said that not doing number 2's is normal (and when I did, very painful). I was also told that the water diet and puree phase adds to this since we are not eating anything solid. I think the first day that I started pooping normally, every time I ate or drank anything.... It had me running to the bathroom. So, If I were you.... I wouldn't worry, your body will normalize itself when it is ready.

My surgeon recommended M.O.M. for bad episodes when I wasn't going.  I got myself regular with Benefiber in my morning shake, plenty of water throughout the day, exercise and stool softeners (non-laxative/stimulant) at night.
