Hi just wondering if anyone knows if it is ok to use Metamucil once you've had gastric bypass?  I don't think that I am getting enough fiber in my food so I wanted to add a supplement.  Any feedback is greatly appreciated.  :)

My surgeon recommended it. Especially if you have any bowel issues pre-op.

OK so you are pre op right now by a few days...but what about Metamucil post op?  There are timesI wonder whether I can use the sme way I did pre-op...I am now 3 years out  and have occasional delay in emptying colon, mainly due to not drinking all my water.....Metamucil as I remember needs a high water intake....even before WLS or it becomes cement in your colon!

Really, my surgeon recommeded fiber post-op too. I have bowel issues pre-op and surgeon said it'll get worse post-op so benefiber or metamucil will be part of my routine for a LONG time. But like other posters stated, COPIOUS amounts of water so that it doesn't just sit in your GI tract.

I've just finished up my container of metamucil from pre-op, did ok...now am switching to benefiber SF...The added fiber has been extremely helpful in the BM department.

If you use it, try a very small amount first. It can swell hugely.

If you decide you tolerate it and use it, remember to send it down about 30 minutes before any protein or vites you want to absorb.

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

I am using Miralax post-op to keep me from the dreaded constipation. I add one dose to my bottled water with a flavor stick and I don't even taste it. I don't know how they did that but you really can't. I have had no uncomfort either.

My doc recommended Milk of Magnesia or Mineral Oil! But never did metamucil get mentioned.
