I say "I had gastric bypass surgery."

I don't have an answer ready and really don't care if people know, so I usually tell people I had surgery.  If you don't want to tell people that, maybe tell them that you eat less than the calories you burn?  That's the basic principle of weight loss no matter how you're doing it...

Here is why I ask.. b/c many people have a negative comment or know someone that had THAT surgery and gained all the weight back or more negatively "died".. just curious how one handles this...

Honestly, people's negativity has nothing to do with me.

Their friend of a friend of a friend has nothing to do with me.

I never got that but if I had, I would have said, "Oh. Well I'm sorry to hear that friend of a friend had that experience" and left it at that.

But opinions are like ******** Everybody has one.

I'd acknowledge to them that weight regain is very possible, but that you have a strategy. I'd also let them know that you "aint dead yet", so they need not worry. Then I'd keep the convo moving to other things. I'd acknowedge that I had surgery, address whatever question they had briefly, and then keep the discussion moving even if it's obvious that you are trying to change the conversation.

Andddddd if the person asking is someone who doesn't care for your best interest, I'd go with what the poster earlier said ....."I burn more calories than I consume".

I just tell them the truth. I had gastric bypass. People have reacted positively about it...well, to my face at least.

I started a new job about 2 months ago. I eat lunch with my co-workers so of course they know that I eat small portions and that I'm "watching" my weight.  They also have noticed that my clothes hang a bit loosely. So when we discuss diet I just say I'm eating small portions and a lot of protein. I am NOT losing weight fast, so I haven't gotten that question. I CHOSE not too disclose my surgery at work. All of my family and many of my friends know about my surgery though.

For me it depends on who is asking. If I don't know you well enough, it's none of your business. But if I'm comfortable with you, I say I had gastric bypass.

I am so happy about the surgery that sometimes I tell before I'm asked.

My dad came at me about gaining all the weight back. I told him that a few people do gain alot back. But, I am going to work hard to be like the majority of folks who don't regain all the weight. And of course, I told him not to worry, just pray for me.

Depends on who they are,

If I am willing to discuss it with them, I tell them I had surgery. If not, I usually say: I have been working really hard at it.

Both are true.

I know....  the people in my workplace are very negative about WLS...  I overheard a few folks talking to folks in different departments and the negative energy about the topic was terrible...  now, keep in mind most of the negative talk came from not the skinny folks, but from the heavier ones...  i'm looking forward to my journey...  2/28 here we come...  :)

If they ask I tell them the truth. But it's curious that some people don't ask because they are afraid that I'm "sick". Others have to do a double take because they didn't recognize me. The truth is, I'm probably healthier than I've been my entire life. And I'm only 7 months out.
